Why is this coin so dark?

Toning at it's worst (best?) turns a coin nearly black.
Care should be taken because of the possiblity that there are 'problems' underneath the dark toning.

I once saw a Merc in a PCGS slab that looked like it was dipped in ebony it was so black.

Dipped a long time ago and toned over like that. Scanner images also can make things look worse.

I don't understand this. Why would you bid if you are unsure, and why wouldn't you contact the seller first to share any concerns? The seller doesn't say anything about a return policy, why don't you ask about that before you bid?

It was from a scanner so it's probably a bad pict. Seems like if the seller was serious he would have commented on the coin's color by saying "the pict doesn't do the coin justice" or "it's a lovely vivid pastel black just like the picture" or something.

Th rims look too big... Maybe it's just me, though.

I wasn't unsure when I placed the bid. It was only after someone else here said they thought it might be a fake that I questioned my decision.

It's a clever ID. Well, it looks like gary wants it no matter what you bid. You could probably double the current bid and watch him chase it

Personally I think its just the scanner the seller used. My scanner will make em look really dark at times.

If both sides, probably overdipped and improperly stored.

Yep, that's what had me concerned, but the softness of some details also made me think sompin was fishy.
