I sent 5 out of 5 gold proofs back, got 4 MS this week and 3 are going back. You don't even need a loop to see the damage caused when the coins drop out of their capsules.
I ordered 10 $1s and if there in as sad shape as yours they'll all go back.
Both of mine came today and both were in acceptable condition. But both did have some MDD/Strike Doubling. I'm not as picky as most -- so I'll be keeping them.
I must've been lucky -- I got 5 $1 uncirculated coins and they didn't have problems at all visible to the naked eye. One of them had a scratch I could see under 10x magnification, but the rest were really nice. I was definitely pleased with the quality of my set...
Because of the low quality of the comms do you think that they may bring apremium in the PR, MS 69 and 70 someday? Something to think about?
That's what I'm banking on. Actually, I bought this coin because of the reverse design...nothing else. I don't particularly care for the obverse but I can live with it. I paid a premium for this coin...but I'm fairly confident that I can get 100% of my money back if I ever decide to let it go. Here she is:
<< <i>The quality was absolutely terrible. The had spots and scratches everywhere. I am sending almost all of them back to the mint. >>
Mine was horrible too...I sent mine back last week for a refund. Too bad, I really like the reverse. I elected the refund. I didn't want to go through with what happened to me in 2000. I sent that years Silver Proof set back 2 times until I got a good set back. To this date, of all the sets I have from 1999 on, the 2000 set is starting to tone.
same here, coins rec'd sliding around outside capsules. damaged. sent back for exchange. dollar proof had surface imperfections, one scratched and one with dots all over the mirrored surface
I got my $1 UNC Commems last week and they were all OK. Sorry to hear about your misfortune. Now the question is will ya be patient enuff for replacement coins or just a refund?
My two Uncs, one proof SF Dollar and one Unc. $5 were alright. The dollars near to perfect, the Five without scratches, etc. but did have some pinpoint spots of frosting loss on the devices - anybody else notice this? Seems like a minor die prep issue.
The rev. of the $ coins are absolutely spectacular, not only the design but the quality was outstanding.

I hope this isn't a prelude of things to come.

They are a bad bunch. I predict that there will be very few 70's and they will sell at a hugh premium.

This commemorative series has had horrible problems compared with the Franklins & Buffalos, ASEs and AGEs.

With the amount of products being offered, we might as well get used to this scenario.............
