p.s. I don't like it as I just don't care for liberty gold in such a low grade, and I can't tell enough to form an (un)informed opinion on its originality.

New ANACS graded it VF-20. It looked more like a "Fine" to me, just like to many of you. Otherwise, the coin looked pretty original, and it sold on ebay for about what one expect to pay for a "Fine". I personally try to stick to XF and AU, but not infrequently will buy a nice original VF. For a rare or interesting date, I might buy a "Fine" or lower, but for a relatively common date, I generally avoid the grades below VF. My reasoning is that you usually do not have to pay much more to get a VF coin, and you get much more meat on the coin for your money. That's my approach the mid-grade circulated rare date gold coins.

Of course, I am not sure. I have never seen the coin. In my experience, however: 1) Coins with that look are not harshly cleaned. 2) Lower grade coins are not generally harshly cleaned. 3) ANACS is really tough on cleaned coins and is quick to net-grade them.
That pic is poor. In hand, that coin will show more detail than what's shown in the pic.
