How long ago did you contact the dealer? Keep in mind this is a holiday week for many.

Sorry, I confess. My five-year-old daughter spilled her watercolors and I thought they looked purty.

Edited: seriously, though: I agree with what Ziggy said. Be patient with him as it is a holiday week.

I'd nicely ask him if he would buy it back at a price close to what he charged for it. However, he has no obligation to buy it back at any price, based upon the information provided.

I think I know who the dealer is. When a dealer tells you he'd submit it to xyz service if you don't buy it, or that he's got another buyer at a much higher price, or that this piece is extra special, or whatever, as a buyer you should ignore all that noise. It's just hype to pressure you into buying. If the dealer was so hot to submit the coin, it would have not been made for sale until it was submitted so they could have maximized their profit. Anyway, yes it's a holiday week so give him extra time to respond.
  • I think you took the right steps in handeling the situation when you contacted the original seller.........posting this note here prior to hearing back was a mistake in my opinion as you know the posse will bug the you know what out of you to give up a name. If adequate time is given to the dealer and he does not contact you then maybe....just maybe you can air your concerns here but otherwise I would handle this in private.

Well, quietly, calmly for now, give him a a chance to respond before you get excited and start a thread about it or something.

    1 out of 5 ain't bad. image

I would tell the dealer what happened, and see if they offer anything, otherwise I would just submit it again to NGC -- it's not exactly like they have a stellar record on weeding out AT or other problem coins.

  • if you found out today, and sent a message today,.......... i think you need to chill until at least the middle of next week for an answer before trying to drag someone thru the 'mud' here.

If the dealer gave no kind of guarantee, and if no deal was made according to a guarantee........ In my opinion you need to take responsibility for your own actions.

You might try a thread on the US coin forum saying you're not going to say who it is. image

<< <i>OK let me clear something up, I am not draging any mud here, I just wanted to know what the best way was to approach this kind of situation. It is the first time I am having to return a coin. Will I deal with him again? Absolutely! He is a great guy. If he knew the coin was AT'd, I dont think he would sell it. I am a newbie, no doubt, and I just wanted to know how to go about this without ruffling anyones feathers. If this post will do so, I will delete it. >>

No, it's okay. You haven't impugned anyone. It's just that this type of thread historically tends to blow up as people demand to know who the dealer is, so there is some concern among the folks here, I think.

But that wouldn't be fair to the dealer until he's had a chance to respond, which could be into next week given this week is largely shot for a lot of people because of the long weekend.

    Or try PCGS.

If you had the right to return the coin after in-hand inspection, yet you chose to keep the coin anyway, then there is absolutely nothing that this dealer owes you, in my opinion, and he/she in no way is required to buy back the coin in question.

At this (late) point, it isn't a situation involving a return. The coin is yours - it's a matter of what he will pay to buy it back if he is willing to do so.

One thing to keep in mind in the future is that you can delete your post but can't delete the replies so if you start something monstrous, it will take a life of it's own. In this case you seem to be lucky not to be getting a lot of pressure to "out" him but this thread might influence how he (or she?) responds.

If I were you I would lay low, let this thread move on to the 5th page, wait for the dealer to reply, consider resubmitting to PCGS, and try to avoid buying toned coins in the future.image

Edited to add that we know at least 4 dealers that it is not. imageimage

For those wondering what is going on in this thread, since the original poster edited out two posts, they are quoted below-

    First post-

    << <i>Hi Everyone,

I have a little dilemma. I found out today when I called NGC that one of the 5 Morgahs I submitted was boddy bagged for artificial toning. I bought this coin raw from a reputable dealer who I have dealt with before (and who is on this board). He told me he was going to submit it to NGC himself if I didnt buy it. Before anyone asks, I WILL NOT SAY WHO IT IS.

I contacted the dealer and told him but have not heard back. How should I handle this situation?

I am actually not trying to be a jerk by posting these quotes, it just frustrates the heck out of me when someone edits out their statements or questions midway through a thread. In the case of this thread, I happened to write my response to the thread while the comments were visible, but when I replied to the thread the comments had disappeared. Therefore, I simply went back a few screens and saved the original post as an HTML file. This is where the quotes are from.

This post could be a good learning tool, but if gutted it is simply useless.

  • You know what would be a nice board feature in situations like this? If the OP could edit posts to take out their name, rather than all the content. That would be cool.

TomB image Thanks! And AnkurJ, this newbie thanks you too by proxy. Every question helps!

    TomB,

Thanks for the edited posts. This is not the first post that this member has deleted partially or totally. I find it very disconcerting to make any sense of the subject when this happens.

Did the OP post an image of the coin? Just because NGC bagged it as AT does not necessarily mean it really is AT. They can make mistakes both ways.
