Sorting Circulated Wheaties - Strange Finds

StrikeOutXXXStrikeOutXXX Posts: 3,352 ✭✭✭✭✭
My nieces & nephews are always coming over to fill their Whitman albums from my circulated wheaties. To make things easier, last night I decided to roll them by date. Figuring it may be awhile before I look at them again, I gave them a quick going over. Found a few neat things. I'll have to dig into the 40's & 30's before long.

These are all separate coins with some light doubling, towards the bottom looks like some lamination, and the last one a filled 9. Nothing major, but still neat to find little things like this. The filled 9 has its own picture too, because I'm on the fence of post-mint damage or deformed planchet.

Any thoughts?

  • Hello,

Looks like you found the "poor man's" double die. Looks just like the pictures I've seen.

    I've never found one....
Some call it an accumulation not a collection

Sweet finds is what makes the hunt worth the backaches and numb butts! image
I decided to change calling the bathroom the John and renamed it the Jim. I feel so much better saying I went to the Jim this morning.

    The name is LEE!
  • I have a few 1957D Lincolns with the filled 9 and some with the upper part of the 5 filled and some with both filled. Also some with the lower part of the B in liberty and the 9 filled. Most are in Au condition. I found them in the mid to late 60's and they have been in tubes ever since untill I seen this thread and had to dig them out for another look. Does anyone collect these minor errors ? I've never noticed any for sale. I'll post some close-up pics if anyone wants to see them.

For Sure!. As much as I enjoy looking at hundred/thousand dollar coins, to me, it is still neat to find a few dollar minor error out of a beat up jar of wheaties. For me at least, when the day comes that a jar of circulated wheaties is "Below me", I'm done collecting.

Comoncents: I'm not real sure on prices - the condition mine are in I wouldn't imagine much. Some members have said the 55 'Poor Mans" DD is about $5.00 in the past, but I'm not sure what condition they were quoting.

I doubt anyone would want these, but they will serve as good instruction pieces for the kids/nieces/nephews.
