Message Boards Membership Growth

bidaskbidask Posts: 14,057 ✭✭✭✭✭
Is the rate of growth on the coin message boards increasing or decreasing. Anybody know?

I used to pay a lot more attention to it before I realized there are so many alts.

I believe the percentage growth slowed a little a year or so ago and has slowed
    slightly more recently.

You can do the math by looking at membership numbers since Feb, '01 if you want.

The elimination of, you know what, seems

to have stopped the growth factor.

Ignoring what's happened since the O.F. was eliminated, I think it's been pretty stable in the time I've been here. There are occasional spurts however.

I've always suspected that active Board membership was the single best gauge out there of the state of numismatics.

If smoebody could figure out how to chart this thing, we'd have all the info we needed.

Maybe I have my head in the sand cladking, but are alts really an issue? I can not really think of 1 case of 1 person having 2 sign-ons here....for what real reason???? to play good cop bad cop?????

Someone said in another thread cladking that Russ's alt had over 10,000 posts.....please tell me that that was a joke..................
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

I think there are a fair number of suspected alts that are indeed not alts. I get accused of being an alt all the time. Which my two real alts find very insulting. image

I have no problem with alts or with people who quit or are banned
and come back under another name. But this does mess up the num-
bers if you're trying to check them. Also bear in mind that if a hundred
members sign up and no one posts, it's not as meaningful as if ten sign
    up and they all post.

You can get membership numbers on your browser if you click on the
    profile. Mine is 5577.

Lots of newbies signing up all the time. What's that, membership shrinkage?

Actually there are only about 12 active people in the membership. Most posts are Russ and his alts posting/discussing/conversing/argueing/etc., amongst himself. It is very entertaining for the other 11 of us. image

Yes, that was a lot of fun at times and a place for mostly coin people to blow off some steam, share stories.

    But now it's all gone.

    Gone, gone, gone..........

    Gone

Gone for good, gone for bad. Gone gone.

    So gone.

Is it really gone though? CoinKing left some wiggle room in his answer about its restoration. (I think the answer was "hell, no.", but everyone on the open forum knew you needed two periods at the end of a sentence when you're sure.

OK. Maybe it's really gone but the spirit will never die.. image

I've had lots of discussions with newer members through private messages and I think the membership is growing, though they may not be posting. Many are just learning and prefer asking questions behind the scenes.
That's been my personal experience. I have had correspondence with registry builders through ebay who never post here, too. It's hard to guage from the message board scene.
