Good Deals on E-Bay....

Yeah Right!

How many of you feel that you get good deals, or even fair deals, on E-bay?

For coins that I'm interested in, it has been my experience that the final price will almost always be at or above the PCGS price guide.
Sometimes way above.

Rationality does not apply when bidding on slabbed E-Bay coins...if your not willing to bid above what your research has revealed regarding recent past prices etc., 9 out of 10 times you will lose the auction.

    Then...you are the wiser, right?

Pass...then pass again and again, do not get caught up in a bidding war, that is exactly what the seller wants.

Can you get to a dealer or coin show where what you look at stays somewhat static?

Bidding is fun and winning is even more exciting...but do not get over extened, no coin is worth the agony of parting with hard earned money.

    Have fun!

There are seasonal trends that help - buy from May to September, sell from November to April.

Ikes and SBAs, my niche, fluctuate markedly in these two seasons, but it helps to KNOW the series one is bidding on in order to be patiently selective.

I use and love snipe service as I set my bid and forget the auction. Snipe services also let you bid low on dozens and dozens of coins and every once in a while you get lucky and ain't that sweet! Rob

I can snag something at 1/10 its expected value every month or so, and at 1/100 its expected value every 6-12 months or so.

I can snag things at 1/2 of their expected value more than once a week -- hardly worth talking about.

I have a running tally of all the money I've spent for the calendar year, and all the money that I've made selling pieces I don't need. That's not counting the value of the pieces I've kept, but strictly watching the movement of real cash. So far, I'm $200 in my favor for the year. It's going to be a tight race whether I'm net-positive or net-negative at the end of December...

I'm not interested in 99% of the coin auctions on eBay I can afford. Out of the other 1% I lose at least 2/3 of the time. Still, the 1/3 of 1% keeps me coming back and spending hours sorting through the crap for the stuff of which collections are made.

Most of the good deals I get, are for raw coins, but you do get some dogs this way too. I did get an ICG 1859 IHC in AU-55 (how's that for a list of acronyms) for 128 bucks, and it actually would most likely cross.

Somebody passed up a pretty good deal tonight, or at least I thought it was for State Quarter Collectors. I don't really collect aside from the Silver Proof Sets. I had a 2006 silver quarter proof set, clad 2006 quarter proofs, and 2006 mint set quarters in original packaging. I put them on ebay for just the price of the silver set (23.95 from the mint). It closed with no bids.

I think I'll take out the silver quarters and put them in Taco Bell napkins.

    Mr Cent,
From the tone of your post it seems you're having a common problem that I see with ebay. Many buyers are unable to treat ebay as a collage of good and bad buyers. Instead, they prefer to treat it as one storefront--like a Walmart or a Circuit City. this just won't work. You get treated the same at Walmart almost every time you visit. But ebay is different every time you visit a different seller. If you're not good at reading people based on a one paragraph, or perhaps one sentence auction, then you may become frustrated and resort to venting on the PCGS forum....

Just like anywhere else, there are good deals and bad deals on ebay. Because it is so easy to search for deals on ebay, there is a lot of competition for them and it is becoming increasingly hard to find them. but if you bid enough, you'll find things at your price. You may have to lose a lot of auctions to win one you like. Or just stay away, it's less competition for me, Russ, Marty, and the other Snipers.
