VAM folks: now we can't even look up pops by using the coin number

You used to be able to get a population of each VAM by keying in the coin number, but now all that does is tell you which regular date coin the VAM is combined with! image
When in doubt, don't.

    Thanks PCGS. image

This bright new move should really help PCGS attributed VAM sales & promote the VAM registry sets.

Dont jump to conclusions just yet.... maybe they're finally going to go with a separate page for them... I don't see ANY reason why they'd "hide" the pops when ALL other pops for ALL other coins are available.... stay tuned...

I doubt we are going to get them back soon. I suspect PCGS may have done this in order to intergrate somehow with the new registry software coming out.
They never were able to automatically add vams to the basic circulation sets without us emailing them to do each one manually. I suspect by not keeping the vams seperate, they will be able to intergrate them into the new registry basic sets more easily, without being bothered with manually doing it.
Another possibility may be that the new registry format will have coin values associated with it. Since the vams do not have PCGS values associated with them, this may screw up the new program.
All of this is speculation on my part of course, but I do know that once changes are made, we seldom see a retracement. I hope I am wrong, but I bet the vam pops will be gone a long time.

Hopefully when they do get things back we'll be able to see PL and DMPL pops for VAMs too. The coin numbers they were using were identical to the undesignated PLs and DMPLs for each date. Made it difficult to add to the registry. (I probably still have a number I haven't put in because I have no big priority in the registry.) It is only differentiated on the tag and also usually in the database tag lookup.

Looks like you have to pay to get to the pops now....Is this something new?

Sorry Yale, I get to wordy in the morning before my coffee. What I meant to say was...losing the vam pop reports, may somehow be a result of the new registry format that is coming this month. Better??

Yeah - - but I'm optimistic that it will all be fine (eventually)

I notice that when I type in coin number 133891 (which is a 1882-O/S VAM 4), it tells me that this variety is "rolled up" under coin number 87138 (which is the old coin number for VAM 5, i.e. the "Weak" variety). Looks like the VAM 4 is now being treated differently - - historically it has always been combined with the VAM 3 (under coin number 7138). I suspect that from now on, VAM 4 coins sent in without VAM attribution will come back labeled "Weak", and that the true populations of VAMs 3, 4 and 5 will forever be messed up.

I emailed PCGS to see what is going on. Hope they tell me this is all temporary.

There were suggestions earlier this year on point value changes for vams. For example,
1891-P VAM-2 Doubled Ear and 1891-P VAM-2A Moustache, are both valued at 1.0 out of 10.00; which
needs correction. Obviously, 2A should be weighted at 8.00 or better. More examples are 1879-O VAM-4 & 28; 1882-O/S VAM-4 LDS and EDS - these needed to be separted and given different weights and added points also should be made for PL and DMPL specimens.

Hopefully, the new Registry software address this issue, and keeps the populations...
