The money I bring with me depends on what I'm looking for.

It's pretty simple: just spend what you can comfortably afford.

No. I plan for any contingency. I have been to shows, even big ones, where I saw practically nothing I wanted to buy. Others had a piece I had to get though I didn't have the cash in hand. But I knew how to get the deal made anyway. Opportunities don't come every day and you never know which days they'll show up. Just have to be ready for them. And I hate the idea of buying coins because cash is buring a hole in my pocket. If nothing is right for the collection, pass.

You have to do this hobby in moderation to really enjoy a no stress level of participation.

    Just my observation.

  • Setting a limit is hard when half the dealers at the show will let me take just about any coin on time. I try very hard to avoid doing that because it is very easy for me to get in way over my head that way. I prefer to pay as I go. I will normally carry several hundred on me and my checkbook. Many shows I find little or nothing, and then every now and then I spend my cash and clean out the checking account as well.

I've stumbled onto an elegantly simple but effective system of limiting my coin show discretionary funds. I simply carry cash to a show, and make all of my purchases with cash. No checks, and no credit cards to tempt me. When I turn my wallet upside down and nothing falls out, I stop buying. Works like a charm. Try it. image

Then you run into a "just gotta have it" piece after you're broke and the dealers says "Go ahead and take it with you, send me a check next month" or something to that effect.

I always bring with me what I can afford to spend at the time but I do not let it burn a hole in my pocket. Most time I go home with most of it. The last show I went to I didn't spend anything and was there to pick up two of my coins from a friend.
