SAE Anniversary sets received from Fedex today. What to do? Opinions Please

One unopened box of 10 sets. I want to keep one set for myself, but how should I handle marketing off the rest for the best results.

1. Send the sealed box for first strikes? Can they just grade nine sets with 10 sets shipped.

2. Open the box and send just the nine RP's for grading, to sell at a later date.

I know there are tons of options...just looking for opinions and the best way to go about it to maximize for future coin purchases.

  • Ask for the boxes back and then you can put back what you like to the original state if you like after sending in for grading.

Keep them raw, why almost double you cost for only an opinion? That's exactly what I did with ten sets.

  • << <i>WELL....THIS BOX of 5 SETS sold for $1200 on Ebay. And from what I understand,
the box you have in hand qualifies all sets as First Strike! You could sell
the entire box on Ebay us such and still have a friend or relative order more from the Mint.

If you order more now and they ship by Nov. 11, I believe those will qualify as First Strikes also....if I'm right.
Again, I think the Postmark Date shipping from the Mint MUST be no later than Nov. 11.
Right now, you have an entire box of Complete First Strike Sets! I WOULD KEEP EM' SEALED!

    JUST MY OPINION! image >>

From what I understood only the reverse proof can be designated first strike after October 24th, and that is good with a postmark to to11/11.
Now if the sets are sealed in the box from the mint they all will get the anniversary designation, but only the reverse proof until a postmark of 11-11 will be given first strike designation.

I have a box that is dated 10-26-06 that I am getting ready to submit, it would be great if all could be designated first strike?
    Anyone have a complete answer?
    Thanks
  • ttt i would like to know the answer to above question

  • I still want to keep one of my sets. Take a look at this BIN $349 It is very tempting to submit for grading.

I have never submitted anything for grading. I see that the silver membership is $50. What grading fees would I be faced with.

  • From what I understand, for the SAE 20th Ann coins the fee is the sum of $14 for a US Modern submission plus $10 for the First Strike/20th Ann designation for a total of $24 per coin times 3 coins is $72 plus $2 to get the original Mint box returned for a total of $74 a set (multiply by the number of sets submittted) plus return shipping.

Yep, so figure that, after shipping, each set costs ~$200 if you get the slabbing done.

You need to sell for more than $300 to make the same amount of profit you can right now by people buying them unopened.

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

Jeff, If you can afford it, get them all graded by PCGS. For the set you want to keep, it will be better to keep it in a PCGS holder anyway. Here's how I see it.....either way, these sets will continue to rise in value. Bohicaman made a good comment, you'll have to invest another 100 per set and then would have to sell for 300 to make the same 100 it appears you could make right now. However.....if you get all 10 sets graded and you're fortunate enough to get some 70's......then the profit could be huge. It's a bit of a risk, but if you can afford the risk, the reward could be worth it. If you dont get them graded, I'd keep them in the US Mint box for a while in case you want to sell the whole lot.

    Also, please see PM.
  • if your planning to get graded, open the boxes first. lots of 68's showing up. thats if you don't mind havings a complete set of FS 20th anniv.
  • i just sent out a sealed box of 4 sets to pcgs this morning that i got by fedex yesterday. from what i understand the cutoff date for first strike on the is past with the exception of the reverse proof. link

so to get them graded now only the reverse proof can get first strike but if it grades PR70 it will be worth doing. i also have another 6 sets ordered with a ship date of 12/8 so first strike is out of the question on those but can still get them slabbed as 20th anniv. sets. i may just keep those 6 sets original. let me add that first strike means nothing to me but they sure sell good on the bay.

  • Can somebody please explain to me the reason for having to send them in to PCGS in unopened boxes. What is the difference between a reverse proof in an unopened box and a reverse proof in an opened box if they get there before 11/11? I find this to be a crock of you know what.

Don't do anything, keep them all in the unopened box. In 10 years you may have a one of a kind. How many people will not open the mint box?, probably no one.
