60-70% Profit on ASE Set?!? What's Going On?

Ok...multiple 3-coin silver eagle anniversary sets are now selling for $160-$170/set. What gives here?
I know a small premium over the issue price might be explainable...but 60-70% over issue...and they're still available from the Mint (at least officially). I really don't get this!
We've either got a real rarity to be on our hands here...or some have taken leave of their senses?!? Time will tell which...

I think I should go to the Mint's site and order 10 more...RIGHT NOW...using my wife's credit card and the shipping address of my office!!!
And I also think this is going to be a very green holiday season....ho...ho...ho...
The reverse is only offered in this set right? And so far there has been no mention of this coin selling otherwise hence this comm so far anyway will be limited to 250K strikes...or maybe I don't understand.

A Shiba Inu is a terrible thing to waste!
that's pure conjecture from posts on these boards!
Buyers want the sets already in-hand; only these can be submitted for "First Strike."
If you can believe them...that's another issue.
But as of now...this should be it...250,000 2006 reverse proof silver eagles.
The risks are: 1. They're already sold out and the order is cancelled....or 2. You actually receive the additional sets and maybe the price sags in the near term...but very likely rebounds nicely.
He says as he reaches for his wife's pocket book...and credit card...

Normally, I'd agree...but...
If these sets do in fact sell out prior to the Holiday Catalog order rush...I don't think the price will sag until the new year rolls around.
For the holidays, you'll have lots of disappointed people trying to buy on the secondary market via eBay...and little Junior must not be disappointed!

I would probably agree with that. I wasn't trying to time it though as the sudden end to the party will happen when you least expect it and when it's over, it's over.

It's actually more like a 40% profit, calculated on resale, before selling costs. The profit is based on the desire for immediate gratification, the uncertainty of future deliveries, and Paypal /check/ money order.

I disagree that it is a lot of end consumers now. If you to to the bidders list, you will see names like dnc_collectibles, and kpreciousmetals bidding on lots of sets. These are not dummys wanting to complete Johnny's AE collection. dnc_collectibles is buying every one that he can get his hands on.

Absolutely. This reminds me of 1999 when dealers were foaming at the mouth and paying nice premiums for the '99 Silver proof sets while they were still available from the Mint. When the Mint finally admits a sell-out on these, the sky's the limit on the price.
