I know you should never buy raw on Ebay,

but I came pretty close to buying THIS.
Any thoughts?

Besides the fact they are all "antique", why would you want them? They all looked cleaned and drab to me. You can find hundreds at any large coin show.

    I wonder if the '99 was a micro-O VAM

Why would I want them? 1. a decent mix of dates, many of which I don't have 2. Although they may end up looking cleaned in person, they looked original to me. 3. seller has 100% positive feedback, but is not a coin guy- so no chance they have been scoured for VAMs. 4. Nice XF-AU coins from the lousy pic. I collect PCGS Morgans, but really don't have the money for it. These coins look like the kind I like for my Dansco.

It looks like about $55 worth of coins for $93 plus shipping.

I would buy raw on e-bay ...................but only from previous trusted sales and only local. You can get a better deal at a show............I'm learning, one baby step at a time.image

in general, not just this sellerimage

edited: not intended for OP either...looked bad when I looked at it again, in general, lots of buyers not schooled in coins.

Short list of raw coins I've purchased on ebay.

    7 MS64 Wide AM cents (2000 )
    1 MS65 Wide Am Cent (2000)
    1 AU58 Wide Am Cent (1999) POP 2
    1 AU55 Wide Am Cent (1999)

    1 MS62 Wisconsin Low Leaf
    1 MS63 Wisconsin Low Leaf
    1 MS64 Wisconsin Low Leaf
    1 MS65 Wisconsin High Leaf
    1 MS66 Wisconsin Low Leaf
    1 MS61 $5 1909 D Indian Half Eagle
    1 AU 50 $5 1909 S Indian Half Eagle

If I never bought anything raw off of ebay, PCGS wouldn't have had as much of my business.

never say never. I have gotten some R-6 and R-7 coins raw through ebay auctions...usually at very attractive prices.
  • I don't think one needs to adhere to a rule to never buy raw on Ebay. But there are definitely things I wouldn't buy raw on Ebay, just because there's a fairly high risk for fraud:

    1) Any classic gold
    2) Anything exceedingly rare

In either of those cases, the potential profit from chicanery is far too high to risk it. So far, most of what I've bought raw was in the $20 range, where I'm not too afraid to take a bath on it. If I was buying something more expensive, I'd want every assurance possible that I wasn't getting taken for a ride.

One of these days, I'm going to have to buy a 1916-D Mercury to complete a set. I can tell you with 100% confidence that I'd never buy one raw!
If you haven't noticed, I'm single and miserable and I've got four albums of bitching about it that I would offer as proof.

I generally don't buy raw coins on ebay, however the seller has a 100% feedback and a seven day return policy. The biggest problem with that lot is the price.

That's exactly what I said when I read the OP!

Those coins are crap: cleaned, drab, no lustre. There are certainly deals to be found on eBay, but not a ton. Most coins on eBay are junk, the ones that are not junk are generally bid up through the moon (unless, of course, I'm selling them image )

image no wonder this is only 2 bucks with less than an hour left.

Ebay is the only place I sell my coins and the advice is NEVER buy RAW.
