I would think it would matter. I don't know gold but I'm guessing a proof gold eagle in that grade would differ in price greatly between the Liberty head, Indian head and modern bullion gold eagles.

I am guessing that we are talking 1986-present modern eagles, and I would be guessing a price of 20% over melt (but I would have to check and see if there are any rare dates). You might consider checking the PCGS price guide for this sort of thing.

The date on these does matter. Some have significantly higher market values than others.

Higher market values? Which "market" is that? You are not suggesting the wholesale market are you?

And Robert, yes, modern gold eagles in proof 69 dmpl in pcgs holders, and that number is way high.

Probably a safe bet. I don't think there are too many pre-1933 $10 gold eagles in 69...

I assume the wholesale market tracks the retail market. If one coin sells for $1000 retail and another for $500 they aren't going to both be $400 wholesale.

The wholesale market definitely does not track the retail market as far as I can see. I see a lot of people getting ripped off in the retail market but that's not the purpose of the thread. The purpose of the thread was to solicit real numbers on the things and what people think they can actually get on the phone, sell these things to dealers at.

This is NOT a modern bashing thread.

Again, I don't see that with the exception of a very minute difference in 2 of the dates. Therefore it ain't a big deal.

So let me pose the question another way. Are 1 oz proof 69 dmpl gold eagles, pick the most common year worth 1 oz of spot gold? More? Less? How much more/less?

On ebay, my quick perusal suggets that they are selling for 10-20% over spot.

In PCGS holders, their retail market value exceeds the value of the gold content by 10% to 15%. I don't know how that translates to "wholesale", (whatever the hell that is in the coin business). BTW, there is no such thing as a proof 69 dmpl AGE.

A year ago they were going close to melt and there were a ton on e-bay.

Now I can't seem to find too many 1 ounce Eagles on e-bay. The few there were, were priced much higher than I would expect.

For that matter I can't beleive that the Proof Buffalo is selling in PCGS holders for less than what the mint is selling them for. ( I know the mint overpriced them. ) It also means people are losing money on these unless of course you get one of the thousands of PR70's.

No idea. I'm not stupid enough to sell moderns to a dealer.

My guess is between $615-$650. Although I would not be surprised if a dealer quoted that they are just bullion and worth melt minus 10%.

If I had to sell right away, it's reasonable to expect to be at the mercy of the offer made.
I would expect to be treated with fairness and not insulted by a LOWBALL offer .... enough to keep me from being upside down and enough to leave a healthy profit for the buyer is a happy medium.
