No, they still slab in the holder. May have been before they started doing it.

You can holder a GSA dollar in the GSA holder, but it's not a requirement. Also, it could be a reholder from the past.

  • It could have been crossed from PCGS. I don't know why anybody would do that, but it's possible.

Maybe the person who submitted it asked for it to be put in an NGC holder.

I'll bet it's just a reholder from before they started banding the GSA holders. That's one scruffy 65 too!

It used to be that you could submit coins in GSA cases and they would crack it out, put it in their own slab and identify it as GSA on the insert.

  • It is a recent holder (late 2005 or later, and NGC has been slabbing in the GSA holder for about three years now.) There is no requirement that a GSA hoard coin must be slabbed still in the holder. If the submitter wants it will be cracked out and placed in a regular NGC slab. This could be a case like that, or a crossover from a PCGS holder that had been slabbed with GSA hoard on the label (another optional description, the vast majority did not say that.) It could also be a reholder of an NGC that had GSA hoard on the label (but I have to admit that I don't recall having seen older holders with that on the label.)

Well if it was in a PCGS 64 or 63 slab and they got it to cross as a 65 it might be worthwhile.
