Did you read the article about the Prestige Proof Sets in CW?

Did anyone read this article. In the article, it quoted a very large dealer who claims to sell tons of these sets to European collectors. However, the dealer claims that the non-US markets do not like the big and bulky holders that the coins come in. So the dealer removes the coins from the Prestige Set holders and sells them in separate holders. Of course, the dealer has a right to do whatever he wants with his inventory, but I thought the point of the Prestige Sets was the special packaging (as well as the coins). I know that it is the coins that are valuable and not the packaging, but personally I like to see old time collections that have the old envelopes, boxes, etc. included with them. What do you think of this dealer's practices?

I agree with you, Longacre. Part of what the collectors want is the set to be all original, incl. the COA's. I sold off my Prestige Sets long ago because they took up too much room, and I looked at them once when i got them and never again.

I have some doubt about the story. There is no substantial difference between the coins in these set
and the same coins in other packaging. There is in most cases no premium for the coins packed in the
regular proof set and a substantial one for the prestige set. Once you have them out of the package
they may as well be from the regular set or other options.

It wouldn't be very surprising if a lot of these are going overseas though.

It doesn't suprise me one bit. It is getting harder and harder to find modern commems for example in any demonination in their original packaging. Even the 4 and 6 piece gold, silver and clad sets in the neat wood boxes. Look around some time and the numbers are very limited.

I assume most are broken up for slabbing reasons but it still diminishes the #'s of complete sets in original packaging whether it's going to a TPG or Europe. The sets are still broken up and the packing destroyed.

    It's image IMO.

  • Sounds to me like some dealer has found a way to sell regular proof sets for prestige proof set money. Find suckers in Europe who don't realize the difference between the two. (many countries have a regular proof set and a special proof set as well, but with theirs there IS a difference between the coins in the two sets. Different finish or composition etc.)
