EBAY fails to protect bidder's privacy and safety

bestdaybestday Posts: 4,271 ✭✭✭✭
After winning some gold coins auctions on Ebay last week I got several different 2nd chance offers .These 2nd chance offers all stated that the high bidder backed out ..even though I was the high bidder in each case and didn't back out
The offers did show that the crooks were lazy....but a more serious issue is the availabilty of email addresses to any one on Ebay and the possibilty of safety . Large ticket purchases on Ebay could openly communicate to crooks..that the bidder has the money.

It's the nature of the beast. Any sort of public online commerce like eBay is going to expose your purchasing habits to the world. It's not just eBay.
  • It is a problem that ebay has been slow to address. In my opinion, they should remove the 2nd chance offer until they solve the problem. As an ebay seller, I use the "private auction" feature on my higher end items. That way my bidders are protected from this problem. The spammers can not email the bidders if they do not know who the are.

How do the scammers get the email addresses of the underbidders? I have had a few bogus 2nd chance offers, all on high dollar items.
Listen. Strange women lying in ponds distributing swords is no basis for a system of government. Supreme executive power derives from a mandate from the masses, not from some farcical aquatic ceremony.

The phishing scammers don't have other eBay members addresses. By simply going to the feedback history of any member they can contact another member thru the eBay "contact member" link on that page. What is most frightful is the fact that many phishing scammers can duplicate the html code used to create the standard eBay graphics to make the message look legit. Never respond to any messages in a private email inbox, especially if the message encourages the addressee to click on a hyperlink in the body of the message. If the message appears to be legit, it can be verified by logging into one's my eBay messages. The message would only be legit if it also appears there.

  • Legit messages can always be found through a person's MyEbay, and will always have the person's full name, not their Ebay screen name. In anycase, always go through Ebay to contact the seller before making any payments. NEVER reply directly to an email on second chance offers. Follow this little bit of caution and the scammers will never get you.

I do wish that Ebay and Paypal would implement the security features that some banks now use, including a user selected icon, and message on legit official sites. This one step would cut the scammers profit by 80% and it requires little overhead. No more overhead than the PCGS forum icons and custom titles.

I'm sick of sellers constantly sending messages about their current auctions.

How do I block legitimate sellers from bothering me with "Hey check out these auctions" messages?
