My first holed coin - an 1807 bust half

JRoccoJRocco Posts: 14,277 ✭✭✭✭✭
I love this coin. I paid nothing for it because it is holed and when I got it in hand I smiled even more.
What do you think?

The full, lower left serif on the 1 in the date makes it a O-112 the way I see it - not a O-111. Still, a fun coin. Seems like the early dates are getting harder and harder to find.

The O-111 and the O-113 (small stars) are the two of the four die-pairings for the 1807 Turban half that are kinda missing the bottom left serif of the "1" in the date.

The other diagnostics that I use for checking the difference between O-111 and O-112 include the star one position (pointing to the middle of the denticle on O-111 and between the denticles on O-112) and a straight line I draw along the left edge of the end serif of the upper flag of the seven - on the O-112 it hits just slightly to the right edge of the lowest curl while on the O-111, the line just touches the right edge of the lowest curl.

It's a tricky distinction to make when assessing die variety on the 50/20 models (absent the presence of the beard!) when the coin is in worn condition!

    Hey thanks guys.
I appreciate the diagnostic help zap1111. When I first pulled it out of the 2X2 I got a quick rush that it was a possible O-111. There were no cracks, no lumps, things had that possible look to it, just that full lower serif kept me coming back to the O-112.
Well it still is a pretty darn nice holed O-112.
    Thanks again.

If that was an O-111 with no kinda beard....... We'd be bestest friends. Till I could pull it away from you image. I have two examples with beard, don't know if I'll ever have a prime O-111. I like your holed coin and want that one too though.image
