I never thought that I would post photos of my VAM discovery coins...

Much less two of them.

To be accurate, I didn't discover them - I just sent them to be VAMSlabbed. John is a great guy to work with! Out of 60-odd coins I got smoe nice ones, including the below.

If you ever get a chance to work with John, don't hesitate. He's quick, accurate, and loves what he does.

I'm looking forward to sending John a few 1878 7TFs and an 1878-S that have me stumped -- and I really do wish him the best of luck! image
    When in doubt, don't.

If you ever wanted to post an pic or two of the wing area of the 1878-S, I would be glad to try and help out. . .

Thanks for the plug, Keith! Here are some bigger pictures of the two coins. John Coxe missed out on discovering the 81-O VAM 1E by taking too long to sending the coin to Leroy. You snooze, you lose. image

Thanks for posting those, the photos are great.
Just one question; I'm not familiar enough with Morgans, but I'm wondering if you're from Phildadelphia i.e. phrygian
    as in that phrygian cap
    that phrygian dog bit me
    that phrygian blah blah blah...????
or was the Bay Ridge Brooklyn...can't remember...

Yeah, what a difference a week can make. Hehe. It's all in fun and the more the merrier anyway. BTW, Leroy didn't mention the rarity assessment in his letter back. What was it for the 1E?

Also, it is good to see folks concentrating on overlooked dates. There are some, like 1881-O, that should have more varieties than are currently represented. A key one to consider lookinng for is a possible 1881/0 overdate. Look at the characteristics of the half eagle of the date. Similar could have been possible for any of the mints' 1881 dollars too as the same folks were preparing the dies for these.

Here is the obverse of an 1881/0 half eagle I sold in January for consideration.

I was surprised at how much there is to find for 1881. There were several different date punches with different afflictions on the digits. There are several repunched dates as well. As for overdates, there is very likely an 1881/79 of some mint waiting to be discovered. The dash under the 8 from 1881 to 1883 might not always be just a dash. Take a look at 1881-S VAM 8A, which is not a rare coin, and use your imagination.
