As a collector, I love the AU58 Grade. I feel you get the most bang for your buck at this level. I have a feeling most collectors feel the same way because these are so tough to find.
Here is PCGS's definition for AU58:
AU-58
This is for "About Uncirculated" (the grade) and "58" (the numerical designation of that grade). Also called "Almost Uncirculated-58." There is the slightest wear on the high points, even though it may be necessary to tilt the coin towards the light source to see the friction. In many cases the reverse of an AU58 coin will be fully Mint State. Less than 10% of the surface area will show luster breaks. The grade of "Borderline Unc" equates to AU58.

the coin shown would appear to be missing more than 10% luster.
Both NGC and PCGS have slabbed MS65 seated half dimes with less than 90% of the coin showing luster breaks. The worst I've seen is a MS65 with only about 50% of the luster left. Typically an AU58 these days may show about 30-80% orig luster. The half dime shown appears to have about 30-40% luster.

Good post but I gotta go against the grain as usual.
The secret has been out and myself I stay away from this grade level these days. I let the plastic chasers, chase them. One reason is I don't think most 58's out there are really 58. And they have been promoted so much the prices aren't any bang for my buck anymore.
JRocco, if I remember correctly that 1808 is a (cough) NGC holder. Surely you're not presenting that as a 58 are you?
I would claim that 53s and 55s are also good pickings.
These are all 58s.

Heh heh I think you know better than that. But I'm tellin' you know who.
That 1808 is definitely an AU-58 IMO. The image is good, but it doesn't show that very nice luster.

Actually, if it were brushed up it might MS62 the way they grade these things, but I don't like to brush coins. We sold it as is, several months ago.
For what its worth, I think its a nice AU.
