coin sent to PCGS was the one he got back (update and conclusion)

DennisHDennisH Posts: 14,040 ✭✭✭✭✭
One of my buddies recently bought a 1904 Liberty $2.5 for little more than bullion price and sent it to PCGS for grading. He figured it was MS-something, although from his description of the fields, marks and lustre it sounds like it was at least a 62. Here's a picture of what he got back:

image

A call to PCGS resulted in the opinion that "a mistake like that couldn't have happened, so the coin is yours", but my buddy asked me to take it down there for them to hang on to until the real owner either figures out he has the wrong coin, or PCGS determines where the error happened.

Stay tuned.

Edited to change an unfortunate choice of words in the last sentence ("switch") to a more accurate representation of what I meant to say in the first place ("error"). There is no dark meaning or message to this thread for people to infer or create in their minds, nor was any such thing intended; I was simply pointing out an amusing and extremely rare situation that I fully expect to eventually be straightened out. My apologies to anyone who got the wrong impression.
When in doubt, don't.

Part of the four fell off on the grading room floor, was swept up by the janitorial service and is at this very time being melted down for raw gold point value!

Well, dates of the coins aside, we can't be certain about that. If the coins were in fact switched - with no disrespect to Dennis or his friend, I, for one, don't take that as a given - and the one in this thread graded a couple of points higher than the other one, the person who rightfully owns this one, might have received an MS62 that is worth $500-$600 less.

I have also sent in a coin to a TPG and recieved back another coin. I sent in a choice AU+++ 1864L Indian and was given back an 1864L slabbed as a VF20. The coin I sent in was light in color with hints of red. The coin I was given back was dark chocolate. I had owned the 1864L for a long time and knew the coin very well. I had sent it in with about 10 other coins and all the rest were the same coin. Either a mistake happened or a switcharoo was pulled. Either way I did not have photographs of the coins before they were submitted and the customer service reps and management said that this could not have happened and they never make mistakes like that.

At least I learned a valuable lesson, now I always photograph all coins I submit.

If any reputable TPG ever switched coins, that would be the end of them.

I can certainly see a mistake happening. I've sent thousands of coins to PCGS, not one time have I ever thought a different coin came back. Yes I received grades I thought were wrong, but not the wrong coin.

I recall smoeone was stealing or switching coins in the PCGS slab sealing room in the late 80's or early 90's.

    Dennis,

This was a mechanical error, plain and simple. For you to make the leap directly to coins being switched is a surprising stretch, considering that there are several equally plausible explanations, all of which lack the dark implications that your conclusion implies.

I will not tolerate baseless accusations on this forum and I'm really close to banning you for this one.

I did not make any accusation whatsoever that coins were switched, because I do not believe that any intentional act whatsoever was committed. Like you, I also believe that a simple mechancial error occurred... plus a shipping error. I merely stated that the coin submitted was not the coin that was returned. I also believe that the rightful owner will eventually surface, and that the respective coins will wind up where they belong. That is why the 1901 in a 1904 holder is going back to PCGS; so that the right and proper thing can be done as it should.

By the way, I am dumbfounded that your perceive I stated a conclusion in my post, or that there was a dark implication. Please enlighten me where you see these.
    When in doubt, don't.

I didn't perceive Dennis was accusing anyone, perhaps the word choice "switch" was meant one way, but viewed another.

I think it's understand errors happen and that PCGS must maintain it's reputation.

Mechanical errors happen all the time. That's what I meant. I did not mean that anything nefarious was going on. People post error slabs here all the time. Coins get mixed up once in awhile. I did not mean "switch" as in switched on purpose. Mistakes happen.

    Mr. Guth:

It seems you may be out of line. There is obviously a mechanical error. There may also be other issues, but neither the original poster nor you have proof either way. I recognize that this is your playground, but to bully-up when suggested that PCGS made an error is crazy.

As long as you are looking at posts, when is the Q&A forum going to be recognized again?

Uh...unless he photoshoped that coin from an 04 to an 01...the coin was ACCIDENTLY switched. Not tryin to be rude, but he said he sent in an 04 and got back an 01.

I don't think its appropriate to automatically assume a switch was impossible. Not probable, but not impossible. Just my two cents image

I'm new to all this and am very interested as I've gotten to the point where I have many coins for submitting. I have a few questions so I'll try to be brief.
Is there any way of knowing whether a 1901 or '04 was submitted? (photograph?)
Is there no procedure for incorrect info on submission forms?
    What type of mechanical error?
Is the response policy - we don't make mistakes like that?
Was and if so why was a 1904 tag placed on a 1901 coin?

    Appearently...

Actually, unless there is a photograph theres no way of really telling he sent in an 04.

Sometimes PCGS will make small errors such as a labeling error, however I have never heard of them mixing up an order. It doesn't mean its impossible though, and Dennis should NOT have been adressed in the manner he was.
