VAM Clashed "E"'s and other great mysteries....

In what lower grades, generally, does a Clashed "E" become undetectable??? I've never found one, but I would imagine that circ. examples would be too worn to decifer. Am I correct in thinking this?

In other words, on a lightly struck Clashed "E" example, would it be a waste of time looking through coins in lower grades for the elusive "E"???

Depends on the clash, the particular VAM. I bought an 1891-O VAM-1A with a clashed E recently enough that has a very clear E in F-02 condition.

Generally on the 1884 O, you can see it down to VF but it's extremely hard to see it any lower. The 1891 O can be seen even down to F02 as Coxe has shown.

It's in a relatively well-protected part of the coin as far as wear is concerned. The bigger problem is dirt and contact marks.

'E' clashes are usually visible at lower grades because of the protected placement. Pitted reverses are usually a far larger problem, they go away in XF or so; making some quite scarce.

I thought there may have been some sort of correlation in the Top 100/Hot 50 pricing, but apparantly they
just aren't listed because of their status on the grading scale.

I've never seen one in such a low grade, so I wasn't sure if my search was for moot.

I hadn't expected to find one so low either. Astonishing really that the E is so clear.
