Do Ebay Titles Like the One Linked to Below Annoy You?

1879-O MORGAN DOLLAR MS-64 PCGS WORTHY! KEY!

Why do they have to put PCGS in all of their titles when the coin is obviously not PCGS.

They could be even more deceptive. They could use a term like "a PCGS value coin" which is misleading and intentionally vague (not a PCGS coin but, in our opinion, valued as one) and then house it in a clear holder and image only the coin showing a clear plastic ring that could, in a glance, look like the center of a PCGS mount.

That, according to Ebay, is keyword spamming. Here is a link by which to report it:link

1890- O MORGAN SILVER DOLLAR $9,000@MS66 RARE MINT!

The above is also bad, sucks in newbies for AU circ coins, and should also be banned because
    it's misleading and false.
  • messydeskmessydesk Posts: 20,722 ✭✭✭✭✭
It appears the seller has changed the title to say PCGS BONUS and is offering a PCGS bonus coin in the smallest red font possible with the purchase of his AU 1879-O dollar. Reported, nonetheless.

This kind of keyword spamming used to be rampant in the microscope listings and is now non-existant, demonstrating that it is possible to put an end to it.

He rejected my offer for 1 cent. Wonder why? Reported. Also reported another keyword spammer. Has a coin in PCGS 69. Lists the PCGS 70 value $600 in the title. Ca-stover is his ID.

Its possible to search Ebay for certain date AND PCGS or NGC, isn't it? I guess some people wouldn't want to wade through tons of listings of raw coins if they don't want to buy raw -

I search eBay by coin type, year and TPG. I don't buy raw coins sight unseen and pictures on fleebay are not what I would call sight seen!

No but if you want slabbed morgans you search for "PCGS Morgan" and maybe the date. The belief is you might see theirs and change your mind--especially if what you want isn't there.

These don't annoy me. In fact, they tell me more about the seller than some of the other auctions. I look at this and I know that I can expect the worst. Don't trust him and don't spend a lot of money here. If I'm looking for this coin in AU and it is listed as MS63, I might bid AU money for it...that's what I see here.

The second most used search query in the US Coins category on eBay is "pcgs". The first "coins". Third is "ngc".

Are you incapable of understanding or you just don't want to understand?

I certainly don't agree with your views towards plastic, but that's OK, I can understand your reasons. What is curious to me is that you can't seem to accept anyone else's reasons for plastic. You have every right to disagree but to say you don't understand the reasons doesn't ring true to me.

  • dorkkarl,

I was glad to see your return to the forums and your no-nonsense approach. However, I have to agree with Uncle Joe that your response was overly harsh. Obviously, you don't collect red early lincolns like I do or you would undeerstand why searching for a particular TPG makes a lot of sense.

Perhaps simply because it is eBay. Unless you like buying raw (third world graded coins are effective raw too) in that maggot's nest, insisting on a third party's validation might be prudent for some buyers. Personally, I buy more raw than slabbed there simply because I either know from whom I am buying or can assess the appropriate lowest likely grade (and cleaning/toning status) and price it accordingly. I will say this thouh: if I am looking for a DMPL,, "PCGS DMPL" will be among the searches I will perform. Only a COMPLETE IDIOT would buy an apparent DMPL as a DMPL for a DMPL price raw on eBay.

You don't understand because you don't like plastic. Maybe the PCGS (plastic) forum is the wrong place for you. Perhaps rec.coins?

here's what you don't understand. they way the scenario is set up here in this thread as i understand it is, your sitting there at your computer. suddenly you decide you'd like to buy a coin for your collection. so you got to ebay to do a search. what do you search on? PCGS???

that makes no sense whatsoever! it's idiotic!

you'd think that if you had a coin collection & you wanted to buy a coin, you might, just possibly, want to search for A DATE FIRST, then maybe a grade or brand of plastic.

i just don't understand the whole idea of going on ebay for the purpose of searching for just the word "pcgs", that's all.

    K S
  • I do search for PCGS, but I do it this way:

1909 PCGS -------- if I am looking for a coin dated 1909 slabbed by PCGS....cover both that way....but then again, I am a simpleton.

    Correct!!!

Again, why is it idiotic, because you don't do it that way or you don't understand?

I suppose for people building type sets and aren't familiar with ALL series, doing such a search would yield certified coins at a particular price and/or grade point. This could come in handy if you aren't concerned with what the date reads on any particular type coin but just wanted a faithful representation of a coin from that particular series.
