Soliciting opinions on this toned Morgan dollar.

p8ntp8nt Posts: 2,947 ✭✭✭
I was asked to photograph this coin and put it up on the boards while asking for opinions. The coin could be slabbed or raw (and cropped). I will not tell. Do you think it is original?

The toning definitely does not have that baked-on appearance and I agree it looks incidental. I vote NT.

NT. Probably stored in an envelope or wrapped in tissue paper and stuck in a drawer or something for a long time.

I thought that , too Coxe. I first typed that it looked like it spent years in a whitman, then transferred to one of them old tan 2x2 envelopes. I opted to change my first entry to leave out exactly what you say.

Saw a bunch of them like that in a cigar box once, each individually wrapped in old gift paper.

I do believe the board has spoken. Ya gonna give us the the opinion of the grading service/ or tell us if it is raw? I can understand if you can not do this. jws

The coin just got back from NGC in a bodybag for artificial toning.

Ouch. I beg to disagree. Already have as have many others. Even with the opinion of the, "expert grading service", I still do not agree. jws

CLW54 certainly nailed it when he said <<Soon smoebody will say "AT" to change the dynamics of this thread.>> image

How accurately do the images portray the color?

    The images are accurate.

I too thought the piece was NT (which is why I suggested it be submitted). Both the owner and I were surprised to see it bagged...

The BB was what inspired this thread image

This is a piece that I sold a few months ago. It has very similar toning and yet was graded by NGC.

i like it, but wouldn't pay much of a premium for it. it's common kraft-envelope artificial toning (perfectly mkt-acceptable though)

Someone may have tried to enhance the reverse, and that is why it got bagged. It would not surprise me if the reverse was originally a bit more subtle like the obverse. That was my original thought, but I opted to stay more positive. This is one tough environment for grading toners.

I think NGC is looking for a resubmission fee. Maybe they are becoming a little paranoid due to all the painted schlock they've been recently holdering? image

I agree with that speculation. Also, they all make mistakes and lately when there has been a question the top three seem to settle to err on the side of caution.

I like it and think that it would look awesome in a toned type set. AT? I never would have voted that way.

Photos are accurate...its NT. That sea blue color is near impossible to fake.

It looks like a original 65 to me. I have a few PCGS coins with the exact shades of magenta and blue..its actually pretty common.

Here found this one...My pictures are horrible...but if you look at the Reverse you can see the blue and magenta. When its tilted, it lights up like the coin in your picture.

Heres another with the blue/magenta Scheme

Actually that blue color is one of the easiest to fake along with the dark golds.
