Some thoughts on Capped Bust Halves

Let us take a look at the popular range

of AU-58 to MS-64 coins. Aside from the grade

assigned to the coin, they seem to fall into several

catagories.

1. Top of the list are those coins with origonal luster, good strike,
origonal skin and with a toning that implies NT.

2. Still high on the list are those coins with luster, that
were probably dipped a long time a go and have retoned
a lovely natural coloration with good strike.

3. In the lower tier are those coins with only a small amount of luster if any, dipped multiple
times, just make it for the grade and have what can be refered to as a
funky color with average strike for the date.

4. Coins totally lacking any luster or origonal skin. Heavily dipped, weak strike.
These coins will also have dings on the edges, distracting marks on the surfaces
and dull, dull surfaces and ugly color. I

Regardless if the prices for this series of coins softens or not, those coins in the
first two tiers will always be desireable, hard to find and will cost significantly more then sheet.

Those coins in the bottom two tiers make up the vast majority of what is available
and are far from desireable, nor should they be expected to enjoy the price appreciation of
their more attractive brothers and sisters in the top two catagories.

Sometimes, a nice VF-XF Bust half with good honest wear and the color of antique silver,
will have a more desireable appearence, then harshly treated coins in the MS in the bottom two
tiers. As such, these coins are highly collectable and can see a modest increase in value

Just one collectors oppinion. Look foward from hearing other opinions.

I think somewhere in the middle of that bunch fall the crusty busties, which have an appeal all their own.

    Bear,

I have been a serious Capped Bust Half Dollar collector by Overton variety for 30 years. I only wish I could concentrate on your preferred AU58 to MS64 grades, but my finances will not allow such.

What you said makes good sense, and I agree with you. Time to fix dinner so I cannot comment further at this time.

I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

    Bear,
I looked earlier today on eBay and the "early halves". There were 582 listed. It seemed like a lot too me although I don't really follow them.

Based on what I saw available today, I'd say you are right on.

Lava you are correct about origonal crusty appearance.

They are desireable, I just am not sure where they should be placed.

I suspect they would be somewhere very near the second grouping.

Perhaps I should have listed a 2A and a 2B. They may even rang between group

1 and 2, I await more responses. Perhaps, we can develope a consensus.

I picked up my first AU58 Bust half about six months back, and it is quickly turning into one of my lifelong coin holdings. Its condition is one that is just so hard to find. While it may have been dipped once, it still has full cartwheel luster and fantastic eye appeal. I have been scanning Ebay and every coin auction site and in six months have not found another AU as nice, or even worth paying the ask price for that matter.

While It is a bit easier to find nicely toned and mostly original MS62-64 pieces, those choice AU are a far better deal for the lesser cost and difficulty in finding them in my opinion.

I find that Bust Halves in AU-58s, in the top

two catagories seem to be priced between

AU and MS-60 on the PCGS Price guide. In some

instances, the AU-58, in highly desirable condition, may even

bring a full MS-60 price or higher. Often, a wonderful AU-58, is

far superior to even a run of the mill MS-62 or 63.

Hit the nail on the head Bear. Your statements could be applied completely accurately to CBH10¢'s as well.
