Best fictional coin story?

What's your favorite fictional coin story?

These are the best two I have ever read. imageimage

These are two of my favorite Hardy Boys books. They have the same title but they are different stories. The first one is the original story. It's my favorite. It's got coin conterfeiters, a pine tree shilling and the Hardy's find out they have a secret numismatist in the family. The second one is newer but it's good too. It's about a retired Doctor and his coin collecion and a Seneca indian false face mask made out of melted coins.

Even my parents liked the stories.

BTW, I'm doing a giveaway of these 2 Hardy Boys "The Melted Coins" books HERE if you would like to enter. image

Interesting answers but for some reason I don't think they are what the young man is looking for. image

There are a couple really good Scrooge McDuck comics involving coins, there was a thread about them a while back. I'll see if I can find them. image

Closet numismatists are a scary thing to have in one's family.

I remember reading that one years ago. image

I can't remember reading any other fictional works that specifically dealt with specific coins as that one did.

My favorite coin scene in science fiction is from Robert Heinlein's "Time Enough for Love." The main character time travels back to 1914 and brings a bunch of repro coinage with him. He has to be careful not to spend money that hasn't been made yet, and eventually goes on to create a felt vest lined with Saints as a way to smuggle wealth into South America.

Samuel, this book is a love story and was made into a movie. A coin plays a BIG role in the story however. The music in the film was quite good, too. Somewhere in Time

"The Money Pit" is in Donald Duck Adventures #1, June 1990.

I bet there are other issues with coin stories, too!

I saw a Twilight Zone episode in which the main character throws a nickel (I believe) into a box to pay for a newspaper. The nickel stands on end, and he can read everyone's thoughts. It starts driving him nuts, then, he buys the evening paper and throws another coin in the box. It knocks over the first, and he can no longer read minds. Problem solved.image

If you'd like something for an audience that's a little more mature than The Hardy Boys', Raymond Chandler's "The High Window" is a great read.

Or, here's one that features collectors and dealers: "Loose Coins" by Joe L. Hensley & Guy M. Townsend

In the novel "Sahara" by Clive Cussler (and the subsequent movie) the characters are on a search for a lost Confederate ship that contains a large hoard of Confederate gold coins. Good movie, an even better book.

Hawaii Five-O $100,000 nickel (if memory serves me correctly).

Story about the theft of the 1913 Liberty Head nickel which was then hidden in a gumball? machine. image
