Hairlines and PCGS

whatz up with that??

My latest widget arrived the other day, pulled out the loop and the hairlines on Ms Libertys face jumped
right out at me.

Why only hairlines on Ms Liberty and none in the fields?

Should this coin have been slabbed ??

Plus I have a hard time with the grade assigned. Opinion on grade please............What say you all???

The first image shows the hairlines fairly well.

Coins and other things sliding on top of a Morgan are less likely to contact the fields than the higher devices. The cheek being the smoothest of such will tend to show more of that.

Also, sometimes if you look closely at what appear as hairlines on the coin end up being polishing line on the die. Not saying that is the case here though.

    No die polish lines here.

I thought coins with hairlines are not to be slabbed.

If that were the case, half the classic proofs submitted would be bodybagged. If PCGS determines that the hairlining is a result of a harsh cleaning, then they are likely to bounce the coin. However, many times hairlining is caused by mishandling, cabinet friction, album slides, or contact with other coins. In the case of Morgans, it's usually the latter from residing in bags or rolls.

whizzed? If so, the drill/dremel was off and it was done by an ape.

BTW, the designation of that coin is JOH-9 if someone didn't bring it up yet.

PCGS grades 21's differently (and easier). Despite all the marks, I feel confident that they graded this POS MS64.

anyone who thinks this is whizzed is idiotically uninformed about what the term means. get a clue before you toss out ridiculous misinformation like that.

those are common hairlines from carelessly being put in & out of a 2x2 flip. no reason not to grade something with as common an issue as that is.

Ouch......that really hurt my feelings, I think it's time I get out of the hobby..........not. It's sad enough I collect widget but now you're saying
I collect POS widgets, my, my, my.

Nice guess on the grade...............though I feel confident is wasn't a guess at all but rather right click on the pic., revealing the grade.

Not easier all the time, especially with PL/DMPL.

I don't have a problem with the assigned grade- but I'm wondering if the hairlines kill the eye appeal/enjoyment for you? image

The hairlines can only be seen with a loop and then the coin needs to be held under a light just right to detect them at all.

Yes knowing the hairlines are there is a bit of a downer when it comes to enjoyment..........the fact that the coin is a 1BQ negates the downer part though..image

Coxe..........Is that a new coin for you/ purchased within the last few weeks??

I saw a 64PL 21 morgan on the bay a while back, first time I've seen one on the bay. I didn't bid strong enough so it got away.

No. I have had it for over 4 years. I saw the eBay one though and it was not remotely PL in my estimation. Looked cleaned but has a really nice strike. It was a Philly one; mine is a Denver. A real PL is tough for that year, especially at the branch mints and very much so as a cameo. Wish the strike was hair better on my piece, but it has it all otherwise.

Hairlines apparently don't keep 19th century type from achieving grades as high as MS and PF67. I recall the 1857 seated dollar out of Vermeulle that PCGS graded as MS65. It had a zillion hairlines from a light cleaning. They still slabbed it. In 1989 it would have either graded 1-2 pts lower or been bagged.
