Do you freely share personal coin info here with strangers??

LakesammmanLakesammman Posts: 17,703 ✭✭✭✭✭
Was asked recently about some coins with regards to when I bought/sold them and what I paid/sold them for. I don't know the person but they seem nice and genuine in their interest.

I don't know if it's a good idea to share or not, so help me out. What's been your habit/experience??

Has the info shared helped you make new friends or hurt you down the road/been used against you??

Anecdotes one way or the other would be appreciated.

I don't see a problem with sharing that info. I do feel, however, that "None of your business" would also be appropriate if you so desire.

If I know the board member (or if they are a member of the Circle of Trust(TM)), then I freely share that information if they ask. If it is someone that I don't know, I try to find out why they are interested and if it is a valid reason, then I usually don't have a problem telling when, where, and how much I paid for something. It just depends.

I find it to be in poor taste when a complete stranger asks me how much I paid for a coin. It would be along the lines of pulling up at a gas station and someone next to you asking you how much you paid for your car. OTOH, if you are an established coin friend, I am more than willing to share price information.

Nearly a year ago, I posted a recent purchase here on the forum, and a forum member emailed the dealer to ask him how much I paid for the coin. The dealer, Al Adams, informed him that it was a private matter between the dealer and myself and forwarded the email to me. At the time, I thought it was very uncool and unprofessional behavior on the part of the forum member but was told by some that I was being petty and silly.

That said, I am not buying coins that are extremely rare or unusual such that pricing information for like coins is not readily available at the Heritage auction archives. If you want to know (ballpark) how much something costs, look it up yourself. That's what I do.

In many cases they are looking for a similar coin and just want to know where the market is. It's not like they're asking for your credit card number, social security number, date of birth, or any other information that could be used for identity theft.

On a rare occasion, I can see where this could put the seller of the coin into a pickle. If you bought the coin for "x", and the coin was offered to someone else at "x plus 10%", it might make the seller uncomfortable and strain future relations and courtesies between you and the seller. To some people, this does not matter. To me, it does.

I'm not extremely forthcoming with all the details concerning collecting
but so long as something doesn't compromise security or confidentiality
then I'll usually answer. Usually there's not much problem saying what
I paid but I may not be able to tell you who the other party was.

Doesn't bother me a bit to give out information.
If I bought a coin for X amount, and it was worth XX amount, XX amount is what I'd be offering it for if I were selling it. What I paid for it is meaningless. I'd tell the buyer the truth about what I paid for it if asked. That wouldn't affect my selling price. I never have to sell anything, and if it bothered a buyer to know I was making money on the sale, he could go buy one from someone else.

Most coins I have worth asking about are available in auction archives. I do tend to give out more information than is in my best interest sometimes in cherrypicking. But it's a hobby not a war.

My rule is if someone asks for information about an item I gladly share.

The only exception is what I payed for something when they are potential buyers.

Good points - the coins in question are varieties and pricing info can be hard to come by.

Usually when somebody asks a question like that it's because they're trying to get a handle on market values for the purposes of a purchase or sale. I have no problem helping with that if I can.

If I want to know I'll usually ask a more general question like "What's something like that go for?" That gives the owner the option of saying, "I paid 5340 for this one" or "They're 4-8K depending on the condition" which means they don't want to say. --Jerry

Yes, unless doing so might negatively impact a client who has asked me to view an auction lot, try to procure a coin for him, etc. If the person asking truly is a stranger, after answering his question(s) I might caution him that some might think him rude for asking. image

Sometimes, of course when it comes to personal information I've also been known to lie. . . .frequently.

Well, pick someone out at random and PM them your address with a note: Send me something for free right now! Who knows what you'll get.

I'll tell you anything you want to know about the coins I've already bought. What you'll never hear is where my next one is coming from. Like Coxe said, it's a hobby, not a war, but I am in competition with a few other highly-motivated collectors in my specialty. image

I've emailed people from their Registry Sets when they have their email showing. That's why they show it right? And asked them "This was a pop 2 coin, I know where mine & the other one came from and how much it cost, (I share that with them; no big secret, 5 million people saw it on eBay or TT) and now you have a new one & just out of curiosity if you don't mind my asking, who & when did you get yours from?" (it's rude & NOMB how much it cost so I don’t ask that but they usually tell anyway) No harm no foul, we have a genuine shared interest in our poptops, if we wanted to steal each other's stuff, out yahoo addresess aren’t very helpful in providing any personal info. People email me and ask me questions too, no problem, that's why I have my email showing.

I've asked questions on eBay before when I saw a coin I used to own but eBay sellers think you are trying to pull a scam and they'll report you for mis-use of the system or something.

It's not like I sent you a PM out of the blue asking "Hey Lakesammman, who did you sell that Seated Half to and for how much?" There’s a difference in sharing a common interest and being just plain nosey.

I did. Wife: why would you spend over $2,600 for those 3 gold 20th set?

Me: Look what they are now!

If they're rude I just knock 25% off my real purchase price and tell them that one.

I share this kind of information with CU forum members, never had a problem with it. Sharing current prices paid on Bust series coins is very valuable, since the prices has gone up so fast. This information I share in private messages, and I keep this information confidential.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
