New Purchase- 1902-O Barber Dime

rheddenrhedden Posts: 6,650 ✭✭✭✭✭
This is my first purchase on Teletrade in something like 2 years, from yesterday's auction, PCGS MS-62. It looks awfully nice for a 62 from the photos (at least I like the toning). This date has to be one of the hardest ones to locate in eye-appealing BU condition, and PCGS has graded only 59 pieces in all grades. I was very surprised that I won this lot. It's a much-needed upgrade for my set, as the 1902-O I previously had was an AU-55 coin with graffitti on the reverse, one of the few "eyesores" in the set. The rest of my set can be viewed in the link below, but dial-uppers might want to think twice before clicking the link.

    Ron,

That's a very attractive dime you picked up on TT.

I'm off to the safe deposit boxes this afternoon to drop off a few things
myself and will look at my Barber dime set to see if there's anything I
should upgrade as well. ( I can't let you get all the goodies, now can I ? )

Again, you've got one very special set there and one to be very proud of ! image

    Mike,

When are you going to post photos of your Barbers (all of them in one thread, of course) so we can drool over them?

    Ron,
You mentioned that you thought PCGS's system would freeze up with your longest post of Barber dimes, what do you think would happen if I did that.

My dime set is 95% raw; my Liberty Head nickel set is also 95% raw; and I have only a couple of images of these raw coins.

The quarter and half dollar sets are 95% certified, just not all in PCGS holders. What ever certified coins I do have in PCGS holders, are pictured in the Registry sets.

Craig Peterson mentioned that he was going to have PCGS "True-View" his set. That's an excellent idea and one of these days, when I get around to submitting my non PCGS coins for cross over, I'll have that done as well.

Until then, all I can do is post a few images at a time.

Nice example. I also like the toning.

Nice pickup Ron, you're right, the coin looks solid for a MS-62. I guess the 02-O is a tougher date for all the Barber series.

I like all of the O-mint Barbers between 1896 to 1902 in BU. Look at the population report figures for all the 1898-O Barbers in Unc., for example, and you will find that they are all extremely tough. Some of these dates are common enough in G-VG that their rarity in BU is somewhat overlooked. The 1902-o has an original mintage of 4.5 million pieces, but there may be at most a "roll" or two of them remaining in BU.

    Nice Barber Ron.

I'm thinking Board members are beginning to realize just how difficult it is to put togther the Barber Dimes, Quarters and halves in VF and above.

I have been working on a VF Barber dime set off and on for years. Just about any Barber coin in the
higher circulated grades is tough. Good luck finding them at any coin show.
