I think a briefcase or shoulder bag would cover it for you.

    - cash/checkbook (depending on what you're spending and if anyone will take your check)
    - magnifying glass
    - pad & pen (especially if you're at a big show)
    - checklist and/or priceguide (you need to keep track of which coins you already own/are looking for and what to pay)
    - reference material (VAM book or Overton, etc. - or just some notes, depending on what you want to carry)

Depending on what you want to carry around with you, a briefcase/shoulder bag should hold everything.

List of needed things at a coin show :
    Money
    Loupe (10x)
    Coins for Trade/Sell/Appraisal/Evaluation
Personal Planner and a pen ( you might want to do business again and may need to write a number down)
    Smile
    Negotiating Skills
Distress Bag ( for some of the prices you might see)

The one thing I would recommend is if you see a coin of interest write down the dealer name or table number where you saw it.

I can't tell you how many times in my early years I would walk around a show, see a neat coin that I liked, decide to check out the rest of the room and see what else was available before buying anything, then decide to go back for another look at the first coin and not remember where it was.

    Thats annoying.

At the Atlanta show I was on a motorcycle & traveling lite, I walked around with about $20K worth of slabs in a plastic Winn Dixie grocery bag. Worked for me. I didn't even have a loupe or price guide with me.
Usually I carry coins in a briefcase with PCGS & NGC storage boxes along with my camera, loupes, price & want lists, notepad & pencil and a pistol. The loupe & notepad aren't really essential because every dealer has a loupe and you can make notes on his business cards.
Change that we can believe in is that change which is 90% silver.

I use a rolling backpack on the bourse. When I examine coins at a table though, it's just a loupe and maybe a grey sheey out, nothing more.

I carry all my stuff in a laptop style case. It has a carrying handle and most importantly a shoulder strap. Most of the time it's straped over my neck and across my chest. Extremely secure and free's you from worrying about security issues. Also, when you're sitting at a table looking at coins you can put the case at your feet and wrap the shoulder strap around your leg/foot for security.

It's painfully easy to simply walk by and pick up a briefcase sitting on the ground and it happens at just about every coin show.

Years ago I carried a full briefcase, mostly full of coin books. Then I moved on to a small carry-on bag with wheels, big enough to carry even more printed material. Soon after, I went back to the briefcase, but with not much in it. These past times, I use a rather large fanny pack. I found I spent so much time trying to attribute coins that I did not have time to purchase those coins I found that I really liked. Duplicates are great!

I would never carry a shoulder bag, especially around San Francisco.image

Office Depote has lether satchels that will carry about ten PCGS or NGC 20 coin boxes. On lighter trips, a leather-trapper keeper works well. You can insert eagle slab pages that will hold NGC and PCGS coins.

  • I have only gone to small shows, so I keep it simple -- loupe hanging off my neck, pocket-sized notebook in shirt pocket, and cash. Works for me.

I prefer a backpack to a briefcase. The more you look like a schlump, the less of a target for thieves you will be.

I try to limit myself to what my pockets will hold when going. Though when leaving, I usually end up with a small bag to hold purchases.

I always use the shoulder bag/strap rather than a briefcase.
I can easily carry around some books/price guides, etc.

Dress down. Jeans, sneakers if possible. The simpler you look the less chance you'll either get picked out for a mark or jacked up on the price of a coin.
