A couple of Buffalo nickels
Just landed and I like'em.
A 1913 Type 2. Funny how some of the pink toning seems to vanish when I throw some light on it.

And a 1913 Type 1. This coin looks a little crustier and more original in hand. I'm all for the freckles...

How are ya Claw? The Type 2 may be 58 but it's one of those odd Buffs that, if it did go MS, could fetch a 63 instead of 62 (know what I mean?).
The Type 1is BU for sure, 64 in most areas I think. Nothing particularly outstanding except its originality, the eye appeal really is a shade better than 64.

Are you kidding Dan? Every coin I show he says is AU, I'm used to it. He just says "AU?" and then disappears, the rat.
<< <i>Nice buffaloes, as always!

Hey thanks Amanda. As this is not a school night, I'd think you'd be at the movies. Or a kegger.

I'm still here. I like them. AU, BU, doesn't matter if they look good.

Why in the world would I do that? Coins are way better.

This taught me two important lessons. First, these coin graders are remarkably consistent. Second, I will never (and haven't since) bought raw coins on eBay.
<< <i>I always enjoy your post cause I know i'm going to see some Buffs. I think the type 1 has a little rub on it I say AU-58. The type 2 looks like a 64 to me . Nice coins. >>
Pardon, but could you possibly have transposed those two coins?
<< <i>Do you have lots of duplicates? Or is the set growing and growing? You're always posting so many new coins, it's hard to keep up! >>
Duplicates in several years xpipe, I am not exactly a demon for discipline. I could do much better.

Yes I did, excuse me for my sins
You threw me off, by posting the type 2 first sorry.
edited to correct spelling and it's probably still wrong.
<< <i>When I first got into coin collecting, I bought a bunch of "MS-65" raw buffalos on eBay. I took them to a coin show where ANACS gave them their free grade opinion. 53, 55, 58, 53, maybe 63, 55, 58, etc. I was devastated. The next year, I thought I'd be smart and take them back and let ANACS have another shot at their opinion grades. This time it went. 53, 55, 58, 63, 55, 58, etc.

I hear you but I don't abide by that blanket rule. These two coins I did get raw on eBay and cost under $100 for the pair. There is a return policy, the seller has 100% feedback, and the images were only slightly fuzzier than these. It was no the rip of the century, but these coins are sound. I'll hang on to them for awhile and eventually may resell them, surely retrieving similar money. It's fun, man.

I should send you these coins (I still have them) and see what you think. Send me a PM if you're interested.

Like I would know something the ANACS guy wouldn't....
Donate to one the Christmas charities here perhaps?
No more of that, I promise.
<< <i>From now on I'm gonna stop assuming Guy's buffaloes are AU.

Shoot, Chuckles, they probably are. You keep me grounded.
Making mistakes is part of the learning process. If it is a $50 mistake, I tell myself, "That course cost me fifty bucks to learn that aspect of grading." I'm sure you learned a lot from those "MS" buffs. But be sure as you learn, to venture to those places where good coins CAN be found, such as eBay. Then use your knowlwdge of coin grading/pricing to avoid the bad deals and key in on the good ones.
Knowledge is power.

A while back at a show, a member here named Jom looked at a buffalo marked as BU. He asked me what I thought of it and I didn't have any opinion on it. Then he said to look at the hip, that it was AU. It looked good, but there was a trace of rub on the hip. It was there. Since then I think I see rub on the hip of most buffaloes posted here, even when it's not there. It might be a psychosis.

Chuck, it's a riddle, man. My eyes dart immediately to the hip, as though a woman at the beach just lost her top--I can't help it. Even on high-BU buffs there frequently is a tiny bit of white on that knob, a bit of a luster break. Now, if there's flatness there you'd think you'd have an AU coin for sure, but no, not always. A soft strike or worn die can saw the top off that volcano a bit. I look for a combo of wear on that high knob along with a similar disruption lower on the flank, another high point. If it's consistent both places and there's also traces high on the foreleg and on the buffalo's head, it's probably AU. But again, not always--we see toned BU coins where the toning is everywhere but on the high points, creating the illusion of wear. I'm not sure, but I think such coins are stored in a way where something presses against the high points and "suffocates" them so the toning can't form.
There is so much more to it than that; I'm just yakking about that aspect.

Yeah but from what I've seen you're about as close as anyone gets to having it licked.
