Why not have a little respect for us dial-uppers?

thebeavthebeav Posts: 4,126 ✭✭✭✭✭
I need to be able to sign onto the internet from many different locations, so I've always been a dial-up person.
It seems that 80% of the people that post images here will always put up a picture that is from 1 Meg to 5 megs in size.
How big can a Buffalo nickel be?
My fleabay photos average 35 KB's and are more than good enough to sell a coin, let alone look at one.....
What's the point of these huge pix ?
Before you flame me, size a few down yourself and see if you can tell the difference......

most people aren't on dial-up, so you won't get people to reduce the size of their photos since they will see it as a reduction in the quality of the photos -- plus, it does take a bit more effort to resize prior to posting.

Most people will post some sort of warning in the thread title, which equates to the modicum of respect you had asked for.

"80% of the people that post images here will always put up a picture that is from 1 Meg to 5 megs in size."

Aren't we overreacting just a wee bit?

I would estimate that far less than 1% of the pictures posted here exceed 1 MB in size.

For example, I always post my pictures at 500 pixels by 500 pixels (example below). Each one is approximately 60K in size. A far cry from 1MB.

Sure, it's tougher for those on dialup, but let's not go off the deep end when exaggerating the size of the images...

Edit: Even Russ's bad boy is only 309K... nowhere near 1MB.

Warning only works if original poster makes the large image, not the subsequent jokesters.

Hey, it's only 309k. That's less than half of the low end his complaint range of 1MB to 5MB.

    Russ,

Now that was pretty funny. Nice image.image

Why not have a little respect for us dial-uppers?

Because you have no respect for better technology...get with the program. I have a dial up program for emergency access also, when I'm in the stix and need to check up on email. I don't go cruising around websites where there are going to be big images and files and I don't expect other internet users to monitor their postings so that it is convenient for those with the slowest access.

Most of my images are in the 40-350 kb range.

I suspect that a lot of people who post coins do not know how to make their images smaller, and I say this because at one time I did not either.

image What's "dial-up" ? Oh, wait...I think there might have been something about that on the History Channel some years ago. image

Seriously, most of us like to see big pics, but I think your estimate of 80% being 1-5mb is just a bit high. As previously mentioned, most will place a warning in the title when large pics are posted. You might want to relax and wait for them to load. I find that most of them would be worth the wait image JMO - Preussen

I haven't read any of the other replies but i wanted to give a suggestion that may help. Back when I used dial-up I turned off all images and read everything as text only. The pages would open instantly and wherever an image would be there would just be a little red X. If there was an image I wanted to see I used to right click it and select "show picture". This works great. Even pop-up images and advertisements just show up as a red X and don't slow you down. Makes surfing the net go faster than anything.

Unfortunately WiFi doesn't work everywhere. I live in beautiful western Mass and there is no WiFi or cell reception in many places. But I'm sure the Berkshire mountains don't help either.

This forum is known for it's large images, and even more than that, there are ways you can stop images from loading. To have people have to limit their image sizes to accomodate a "lowest common denominator" of web-surfing-bandwidth is unfair to those who enjoy and expect the forum's tradition of larger images.

    Having said that...

I don't seem able to post messages here w/ Lynx. (Yes, I just tried.) Plus, the formatting of the forums is atrocius when viewed there. My complaint about big images (if I have one) is that on my 17" monitor, the really big images may only allow maybe half to two-thirds of the coin to be seen at once. (Sure, I could resize them if I really wanted to).

Probably doesn't handle cookies and things like that. You might be able to turn off images in your regular browser settings, though I figure that is a "feature" Micros**t wouldn't have considered for IE.

    Doesn't affect anyone else.

BTW, dial-uppers using IE might try this. View-Internet Options. Advanced tab. Scroll down to the Multimedia secion and uncheck Shw Images. I would think that will also disable requesting (downloading) the image files too, but all bets are off with MS programming. Anyway, that might be an acceptable temporary solution when dialing up. Can go back and forth between settings at your whim.

7x magnifier doesn't even do it for me. I'm not even all that old yet, all things considered (53). If I make it another 20+ years, I guess the eyes are done-for. Right now, I've got a 16x thing plus a 12x headset and I still can't always see everything. I guess I am going blind and please, don't poke fun. It's not funny. I hope I don't have to give this hobby up, because I so love it.

Linda -- I use a 20x loupe for several hours a day and my lousy eyesight has only gotten worse with age. I had to be insane when I got into collecting varieties. At least I am only doing big silver dollars now. Those half dimes especially would not work out so well anymore.
