Gift certificate from the local coin shop?
Set dollar amount and you can spend it whenever you find something you really like or want.

Always looking for attractive rim toned Morgan and Peace dollars in PCGS or (older) ANA/ANACS holders!

She called me long distance one day to ask if I wanted to buy a roll of Buffalo nickels for $7.95 + $4.95 S&H, she seen the full page ad in a newspaper and thought I'd be interested...bless her heart.

I'd say, just about anything from the US Mint...got to be better than "pot luck"

I always put numismatic books on my list - that way there's no fussing with a "Shop at Home" experience or getting a third-world slabe, etc.

It would be a different holiday, but I suppose a 66DMPL (without the clash clean-up) for 83-CC Morgan. I either cannot locate such a beast in my specified condition or am not willing to pay the ridiculous price when I do. Better to just get it in the blind of the price. Best would to be just hook her up with Laura and trust her judgement on a correct coin for my set.

My wife always said "I don't know why you are so fond with those ugly coins. To me, they are nothing but junk"

When I used a magnification, carefully viewed my AGE coins, slowly from left to right, from top to bottom, from obverse to reverse, she could not stop laughing and said "Seem to me you like those more than me, huh"

anablep; No local coin shopsimage. Love the idea of a set dollar amount. People this makes sense.

Craton; You may end up with some shop at home coinz. Happened on my birthday. I just grin and bear it. Her heart was in the right place. image. Just can't believe my son signed the card. image. He's still doing pittance for that. He knew better. LOL.

dwssws; wife and I have seperate accounts...
Lucky man. Do you live in a community property state? You still got a leg up on me though. What is hers is not mine. What is mine she controls with an iron fist. Smart woman. I say this in all honesty though, she spends my money just like it's her own. image.

WoodenJefferson; I'd say, just about anything from the mint..got to be better than "pot luck".
My wife knows/thinks she can shop. Suggestions only embolden her to strike out and find the real deal. Unfortunately at my expense.

tmot99; My wife knows better than to pick a coin for me.
Could you please forward detailed instructions on how you got her trained and how long it took. I feel confident this would be valauble information to many on this board. LOL.

My wifes favorite by Dizzyfoxx; Max that thing out. I go into hysterical laughter everytime I read that. Unfortunately she took him serious. image.

DaveG; I always put numismatic books on my list-that way there's no fussing with a "shop at Home" experience or getting a third-world slab, etc.
My wife is good to me. I'll get the book on 3rd world slabs from "shop at home". image.

Coxe; Best would be just hook her up with Laura and trust her judjement on a correct coin for my set.
HMMM; not really a bad idea as long as I get to define the parameters of the sale. Although I would not wish to constrain her ambition to only one dealer. There are many excellent dealers represented on the board.

21Walker; I never use a credit card for anything. My wife S**ts when I tell and show her a coin I bought for $500.
Try letting her buy it and you pay for it. Works for me. I just end up with a happy wife and a junk coin. image.

In all honesty the wife has put up with me for 20 yrs. She has never wasted a load of money and we never make a major purchase without consultation. That's my story and I'm sticking to it. Please don't rat me out.

    image jws.

    Mine too.

I don't know how I am going to make that MS $3.00G happen... image

If my wife was actually willing to risk the liability that such a Christmas offer would undoubtedly entail, that is probally what I would ask for.

Show her my 7070 set and ask her to fill a hole or two.

More likely scenario... we both like platinum: she as jewelry, me as shiny discs. So I'd probably find an Eagle or two on the toe of my stocking.

Mark; I give her a list of "appropriate choices" and she picks out what she likes from it.

Mark; Ya kidding me right?? I just order the largest catalouges possible, ya know the heavy thick ones. She works for the post office. I know it's petty but I just figure I can hawk them to Longacre in a pinch and it keeps the wife in shape.

Nothing, I don't do gift exchanges. Saves a lot of headaches and wasted money. My family (I'm single) isn't qualified to judge the things I'm interested in, and I'm not qualified to judge the things they are interested in. Besides if there is something I want that I don't have it is for one of two reasons. Either it isn't available, inwhich case it isn't available for them either. Or I can't afford it, in which case more than likely they can't afford it either.

We (the wife and I) always shop for Christmas presents togather, we pick out something we both like or something the family (3 children) will enjoy. That way you don't have to pretend you like the goofy gift you just opened. True there is no suprise to "The grown ups" but you don't end up with stuff you will never use or even like....

If a family member wants to buy a numismatic gift, I would recommend either literature, or supplies - never a coin. Never. Never ever.

    Hmmmmmmm. Lets see.

Coins she bought for me on her own without me asking.

    1937-D 3-legged buffalo VF
    1942/41 Mercury Dime VF
    1921-D Walking Liberty Half G
    1923-S Mercury Dime MS63

I know I can trust her judgement. She doesn't collect, but she will go to coins shows and shops with me and she always inspects any new dimes I get. I like her opinion because she tells it like she sees it without bias.

Now, I could use a few dime upgrades......

I tried this one year (2003).

She asked " Any coins?" and I came up with a list of 6 Canadian coins I wanted from a local dealers website.
Year, denom, KM #, dealer stock # and price. Explained what it all meant.

Less than $40 for everything on the list.

    I got short-sleeve shirts.

That was the last time she and I talked coins.
