Flip flops... or bad business?

A friend told me about a co-worker of his who had a coin for sale. Sounded interesting so I told him if it did not work out to let me know as I might be interested. A week or so later was told by friend the deal had not gone through. I took this to mean I was welcome to make an offer and I did. Offer was accepted and I purchased the coin.
Week or so later see friend at local watering hole and in so many words informs me I had stolen the coin out from under him. My reaction was simple and I told him I did not see it that way. Slept on it and called friend and told him if he wanted the coin I would gladly sell it to him for what I paid for it. Friend declines offer, no problem. Friend tells me I had paid too much and he would not overpay and made counter offer which would have resulted in me taking a small loss.
Contact seller and explain the situation. Seller informs me that my friends offer was indeed higher than what I had purchased the coin for but would not complete the deal and wanted to lower his offer, which seller refused to do.
My friend now blames me for inflating the price. I blame my friend for making an offer to purchase and then not honoring his offer. Who is right? jws

If the facts are accurate, your friend was wrong, and in more ways than one.

You are right and are being more than gracious in the entire affair.

Assuming your side is correct and complete, I can't see where the debate is. You need better friends.

What's the coin and grade? Curious due to the acrimony it caused.

Perhaps acquaintance would have been a better choice of words. I have never met seller and I know there is always 2 sides to a story. This case, 3 sides. I will extend an invitation to join the forum to all concerned. Can I join twice? image. Assuming all my information is correct and accurate it just boils down to a matter of ethics for me. Thanks for the help. jws

JWS is a great human being, I know that much. His acquaitances are missing out if they aren't becoming his friends.

Pharmer, the coin in question is a 1909 Barber dime that on a good day might grade vf-20. The coin is raw. Not a high dollar coin. jws

You need better friends. That's rediculous...especially the part about where he refuses your offer to sell the coin for what you paid for it...and then has the nerve to offer you less! Get real. Lose the loser.

You've been very ethical. You stayed out of the deal when you found out there was a prior offer, when that deal couldn't be consumated and THEY came to you you made an offer and honored it. When the other person complained you offered it at your cost, making nothing on the deal and they passed. Then they had the bad manners to offer you less than they know you just paid. I think you handled things very well and owe apologies or explainations to no one..
