I don't think it's authentic - real large cents are round. image

Is the color in the photos accurate? If so, I'd say dipped and retoned with probable PVC damage.

I'm still playing with lighting. The background is actually navy blue so my lighting washes out the images to some extent. I'm fairly certain this one has original surfaces.

    How about these:

Oh...the oblong images...that's what accounts for the gap at the right side of the image. For some reason I need to crop and paste into a new image file and then resize the image to something resembling a round coin. I'm using a tripod and the camera lens appears to be at 90 degree angle to the subject.

I'm trying to edit in windows pictures and fax viewer...it seems to be the default on my machine. I tried looking for a "white alance" setting...to no avail. Thoughts as to where this function might be??

Hard to fix it completly but this looks a little better.

Get photoshop, its worth the money. Or fix it on your camera first.

OK...this is WIERD!!! I'm on a different monitor now and my pictures are oblong..up and down...instead of right to left...I guess I didn't need to correct for it after all??

    Thanks for the hints

BTW..ddbird...did you do that in photoshop? If so...where?

    Thanks again...Leo

There's no question that Photoshop is the best image editing program there is.
However, it is so expensive, and difficult to master, that it isn't practical for everyone.

Irfanview is free and has a much easier learning
curve. I wasn't trying to be perfect or match the work of ddbird, just seeing what
Irfanview could do quickly. This photo edit took about 15 seconds:

I think incandescent lighting tends to give the gold/warm tones. You should be
able to do better in natural or filtered sunlight. There is lots of help about how
to photograph your coins in this forum if you search the archives. Basically you
set a light up to the right and left shining on the coin, maybe halogens, I don't
exactly recall. You also have to play with your camera settings, particularly the
white balance if you have that option.

It might be a reasonable idea for posters asking photo questions to name
the camera they're using like in a computer help group you list your system
components. Then others who have the same camera or brand as you can
lend a hand talking the camera language you/we understand.

It's very difficult for most of us to replicate a photo as to how the coin looks in our hand.

Besides the already mentioned oblong coins and lighting issues. The luster looks to be fairly nice on the morgan. Keep trying you will get there.

The white balance setting will be on your camera. The manual setting will require you to use a true white background (with the actual lighting that you will use on the object) to set the balance.

    Hope that helps.

Sounds like you need a new monitor and/or to reset your monitor to factory settings. But before you do that, try this:

    (windows xp)

    start -> control panel

(make sure you are in "catagory view", you can switch back and forth via a link in the left hand column)

    click on "appearance and themes"

click on "change the screen resolution"

drag the slider for the screen resolution to the left or to the right, if you're on a widescreen choose a widescreen resolution like 1280x800, if you're on a non-widescreen monitor choose 800x600 or 1024x768
