A COIN from Heritage (orig title was a typo! Sorry for the confusion!)

AnkurJAnkurJ Posts: 11,375 ✭✭✭✭
So I purchased a coin from Heritage on ebay (1931 s lincoln cent graded MS 63 RB). It came in today, was shipped in a flat rate priority mail envelope. When I opened the package, the NGC slab had a HUGE crack in it from shipping. I called heritage and they said to send it back and they will get it reslabbed.

So this will take what? A month? What a pain!
How can a company as big as heritage not know to ship coins in a bubble envelope??

Stuff happens! Relax...you will live longer.

I have received many coins from Heritage and never had a problem like this, but when you ship the volume of coins that they do, occasionally there will be such a glitch. I do know that Heritage is very good at fixing problems when they occur.

I've won many coins from Heritage over the years, and thats the way they have alawys done it. No padding, just a priority mail envelope. Wonder where that shipping charge and 15 percent buyers fee goes?

You get a brand new slab with no imperfections. There was a good chance the slab already had a crack in it or was scuffed up. As already mentioned, life is too short.

Mine came in a priority envelope the other day in a safety mailer which was wrapped inside of the invoice and some other crap papers.

I have only won items from the main Heritage auctions and those have always come in a box with filling to protect the coins.

You might want to change the title of this thread. I assume you meant to say "coin", instead of "con". Because it doesn't sound like a "con".

I have been doigng this a LONG time. Got many coins from Heritage and others and have never had a problem (which is rare to begin with) that was not handled by their customer service in the most professional of ways to more than reasonable satisfaction. Furthermore, when you see a slab cracked like that, you should have a great appreciation ofr the world of slabs as in the old days that would be damage to the coin itself. You should be grateful for their attentiveness in the matter for such an insignificant coin really. You might see it as a key, but it is a common coin that is what, $200 bucks or so. I don't keep up with the date in choice but it is hardly top lot to them. It can hardly justify slabbing IMHO. Such meshugoss over a minor thing.

I am so particular about not having scratches on my slabs, that in almost all cases, after purchase I set coins aside for future reholder. Auction lots are normally scratched worse than those bought from dealers, and lately, I have not bought from dealers. The way of the future is coin auctions.image

And to think that during the 1980's before slabbing, I'd routinely ship raw coins in flips surrounded by a standard cardboard mailer.
    None ever got damaged enroute.

Yeah, and if its in an older scarcer holder you will end up with a new slab that may not carry the same weight [collector or otherwise] that the older slab did. And you will also notice that they just had the goddamn thing dumped in your mail box with no way to prove that it was actually DELIVERED TO YOU. Last one I got charged $12 S&H, but the sticker said $4.55 for flat rate priority plus DC. Sounds like they larned sumpthin offa eBay.

Actually BF, your Heritage package didn't show the full amount you paid 'cause they use private insurance(ever heard of Jeweler's Mutual?) so that the insured value doesn't appear on the PVI label as a temptation to those pesky parttime sorters/handlers and airline employees. Got it now?

Have to admit, the title is an attention getter. To the extent you are being overcharged for shipping and handling I guess technically that is a "con." A $200 coin may be peanuts to some of us on the board, but if five to ten percent of your purchase goes to shipping and handling I think you have a point that you deserve better packaging than you got - and no, private insurance on a $200 coin does not make up the difference, go figure. By the way if you have been reported to "the evil empire" (not my term) they will probably blacklist you as they have many others and you will never be able to even access the many neat features on their website, much less purchase or bid in their auctions - even those on EBAY (which they will fail to honor even if you are the successful bidder.)

I think my coins from them always come in safe-t-mailers, inside a box, inside an express mail box or the equivalent, whether it involves $100K in coins or a single $100 coin. Pretty much everyone minimally uses the cardboard safe-t-mailer in shipping coins, even in letter-sized envelopes. Is that not the experience for some?

While it's understandable that a cracked holder is annoying as heck, it's such a minor issue that it would have been best to handle it privately rather than start a thread about it- let alone with that title. Typical petty dealer bashing that goes on here, and you wonder why more dealers won't post here. Take it up with their shipping dept this is the wrong venue.

Something is seriously disturbing with people that make such ridiculous statements. Making a minor shipping error does not constitute a con. Being the largest coin company because you hire the smartest, hardest working people and build a website that everyone flocks to does not make you an evil empire. And thank heaven for brilliant, helpful contributors like majorbigtime who simply want to announce that Heritage sucks.

Yes I got it now. I know all about the self-insured thingy and I was borned at nite but it warn't last nite. I warn't complainin about the insurance but $4.55 means they paid for priority flat rate plus del conf which we all know is just about effen useless. They could have paid a little extra for signature confirmation which would at least assure that I had to sign for it to receive it. SO DO YOU GOT IT NOW???

Just as an aside, I find it humorous how Ebay sellers generally are raked over the coals for "outrageous" shipping and handling fees if they charge a buck or two more than actual USPS postage, but so-called "reputable" coin dealers and auction houses *routinely* charge $10-15 to ship a single coin, and no one bats an eye.

Somehow it's perceived as acceptable for established enterprises to overcharge for shipping, but if you're a collector or home dealer operating out of your garage, you're a crook and a con artist...

I have to agree with the notion about Heritage not shipping in a bubble wrap mailer.

The last coin I got from heritage was shipped in a flat rate priority envelope(not a box). With only delivery confirmation.
Seeing as I paid $10.90 for shipping I do feel somewhat short changed.

Also noted I paid for the item right after the auction and it was not shipped out until 7 days later.

I do believe their customer service does need some much needed work, but I wouldn't call it a con.

How about they charge you NOTHING for shipping, and you go get the coin yourself!!!

How much would that cost YOU??? If I was Heritage and had these type of whiny complaints from a client (about shippingcharges) for example, I would tell them just that: "Come and pick it up!!!".

YOU are taking this way too far and personally. He has every right to voice his concerns about their shipping practices. As a large dealer in coins, they should protect their products a little more than just an envelope. This very well could have been an isolated incident with a package "slipping" through proper shipping. It really doesn't matter how expensive a coin is. A $50 coin should be shipped with the same care as a $5,000 coin.

Coinpictures does make a valid point though...

The thing is if they continue doing this to many SMALL customers it can turn into a BIG problem. I would wager to guess that if you add up all the sales that are under let's say $500, their sum is greater than those big sales they make.
