Cherrypick of the year for me! Grade? (Many pictures)
This is without doubt my cherrypick so far this year; maybe in the last few years.
1900 O/CC VAM 8B. The reverse clash has Liberty's entire profile, including eyesocket and lips, on the wreath. The fishhook on the obverse in the neck; the tremendous clash on all of Liberty's profile on the obverse, numerous letter transfers. Of course the O/CC is obvious along with the die pitting so characteristic of this variety. On the reverse, eagle's left wingtip has a crack that meets the denticles. Typical mushy late New Orleans strike, it is mint state for sure I think. What do you think the grade might be? These things are going for moon money I believe.
By the way, on the obverse, that is not a scratch running from the dot between E and PLURIBIS to Liberty's forelock that is a die crack.

hi, i'm tom.
i do not doctor coins like some who post in here.

Looking at that coin makes me think that not long after that one was made the dies fell apart in pieces.
<< <i>VAM's Disease is funny. >>
Yeah, I've been suffering from the affliction for 15 years. Had a couple of remissions but it came back.
<< <i>I don't know VAMs (yet) but sounds like you did pretty well.

That's what caught my eye initially. These cracks are very prominent and I bet within a few minutes of this coin's strike the die was no more.

Yeah forgot to do that, or maybe just get rid of it.
Thanks
I would venture to say that this would go AU55 possibly MS63 as these are known for the famous "mushiness" of the strike that and the fact that the dies were close to falling apart....

<< <i>Take a look at this auction, I wonder if this seller will buy mine for 75% of his ask?
Hard to believe. >>
Yeah, um, he's a little misguided in his pricing. I actually e-mailed him earlier this afternoon about that.
Awesome variety, congratulations on the cherrypick.
BTW - I recently placed a VAM 8B in PCGS MS65 with a collector.

Yeah I had a feeling the pricing was a bit out of line.

<< <i>Oh yea baby that's a sweet snag. Excellent work! I'm a bit concerned about that big hit right in the middle of the cheek. Hope that doesn't 62 it. Otherwise, looks O.K. as 63 to me. There's enough other chatter in the fields and another pretty big mark under the chin all of which is in the prime focal area. No worse than 62. No better than 63 IMO. >>
Thanks for the input, the cheek hit sure looks bad in the photo but isn't too bad in hand. I think it is solid 63, if i got a blind grader with a hangover could go 64
