Has anyone seen milkspots on NGC graded ASE's?

I haven't even though I will have to admit that I have seen more PCGS slabbed ASE's vs NGC's personally.

But it appears to me that PCGS has a bigger problem with these than NGC and may well be part of the reason they no longer award the grade of 70 to any ASE's.

Your thoughts/experience....

My NGC Registry Set is spotless.
  • I had a set of ms69 NGC silver eagles. about a third of them had the dreaded disease.

I just went through three complete sets of NGC MS69 Silver eagles. All but 15 had spots. These will be returned to NGC soon.

So the answer to your question, based on the above and experience with 100's of PCGS I would say NGC has an equal amount of trouble.

Have they ever figured out the cause of this?

I've seen many both in PCGS and in NGC slabs.

Using acetone to stabalize the surfaces seems to help prevent them from forming post-certification.

The cause is due to the rinse that the mint uses. The cure is yet to be defined. image
  • Found one milky spot on the 2006W 20th anniversary ASE NGC MS69, below the talon of the eagle on Reverse of the coin.

I have had to have 30 2006 ASE's broken out of the slabs due to spots so far.

Even some Pandas in NGC holders have the same spots.

Of course, I like my coins to have unique identifiers and no two spots are alike. image

I have had milk spots form on SAE's that were never removed from the airtites they were shipped in from the mint. Pulled out a couple of 96's to have graded and was shocked to see the milky residue that was forming on one of them. I gave it a quick dip and rinsed in water then alcohol before sending it in. Came back a 67.

I guess what I am saying is that the SAE's are prone to get these milk spots regardless of what holder they are in so my SOP from here on out is a quick dip and rinse to hopefully clean the surface of any foreign residue that might be lurking there.

Does NGC guarantee their coins with a "market value" guarantee?

    Edited to add photo.

I just looked at an old collection of eagles that were raw/mint packaging and about 20% had spots. Trying to tie milk spots to PCGS isn't going to hold up to scrutiny.
