I didn't say anything about him not deserving an account. However, would you send $500+ to a foreign country to a guy with zero feedback? He describes the coin as good, yet the photos show a coin that is clearly AU or better. You must be fairly trusting, I have some nice Biejing trade dollars if your looking for any.

The high bidder's Ebay name is... imascambuster...and he's got a " -1 " rating. I hope no one bids against him.

Okay. I'm not one to bust up an auction that merely looks "fishy" without proof of fraud, but with this smoking gun...release the hounds!

That is pretty cool. Someone is just searching ebay and calling out the scammers. I like it...

Oh. I didn't say I'd be bidding. In fact, I would be scared as hell. But my point was that if a legitimate seller was living in el salvador, this might be what it looks like. And all of us had zero feedback at one time. In fact, I abandoned an account with 2000+ positives and only one retalitory negative to start a new account after the divorce. My new account is up to 54.
However, someone else just pointed out that it seems to be a stolen photo so it's a scam. I'd say this is a new style of scam to me: no effort to justify legitimacy like most scammers do.

<< <i>Yes, hats off to scambuster. I'm sure he WAY overbid, $1,000,000? >>
Scambuster is in violation of several ebay policies. My guess is that Ebay hasn't NARUd the account because whoever it is has been careful to only use it on real scams. One screwup and it'll be gone but hat's off to ebay for not zapping it.

I know who that person is, and yes i'm glad he busts up these auctions.
I don't much understand this one either. Am I missing something here?

Which policies are those? As long as he/she is willing and able to complete a transaction if the seller can provide the listed item, I don't see any violation(s). And, who knows, in this case, maybe the seller really does have the exact coin pictured on coinfacts.com and the transaction will end happily for both parties.
<< <i>Maybe. But scammers usually try to justify their validity. This guy seems like perhaps he just has a coin and wants to sell it. No attempt to hide anything that I can see. >>
Why do you continually come to the defense of these scumbags when time after time it's quickly proven that the auctions are scams?

I haven't read the policies lately but the main one is bidding without planning to pay, bidding with the intent to damage the seller, etc. Don't get me wrong, I'm fine with scambuster and think that the Ebay police who usually have zero tolerance are using good restraint. If scambuster bid $1,000,000, scambustertoo bids 900,000, and the user really does have the coin do you think he'll pay?

'Cause his Ebay handle is "dmplrainbow"?
Just kidding. In all seriousness though, Jerry does seem to be pretty anti-"posse".
Not that there is anything wrong with restraint, but his reactions do often seem kneejerk.

Russ,
Good question. I sometimes feel bad that I come across as defending scammers and I don't mean it that way. I just don't like to jump to conclusions. One time accusing an innocent seller of scamming and you'll undo all the good you did busting scammers, in my opinion. So here are my reasons:
1. This is the US, not France. You are innocent until proven guilty. I like to see more evidence usually before declaring a sale a scam. In this case the evidence showed up and I lined up squarely behind scambuster.
2. If I don't take proper due diligence in making sure I have all my ducks in a row, I don't feel right coming down hard on a scammer. I bend over backwards to give everyone a chance to be honest and innocent. Prove me wrong and you have an enemy for life.
3. I resist the herd mentality. I believe that the mentality here on the board is that everyone on ebay is a scammer. We know that isn't true but except for a few high profile sellers like yourself, we don't know who the good guys are. Personally, I prefer to think most of them are.
4. I don't agree with some of the posts about how rotton ebay sellers are. Many supposed scams are just exaggerated descriptions. We all know there are 3rd tier graders who overgrade and there are used-cars salesmen who put blondes in bikinis (or less) on the hood of the care everywhere (on ebay and in real life). I don't consider these sellers to be scammers. I wouldn't buy from them generally but they aren't scammers and we get way too many threads on these auctions.
4b. Once we get one of these threads going we get those piling on with "Typical Ebay" or "I wouldn't buy anything on ebay if it was free". That should bother you as an ebay seller.
5. The truth is usually neither black nor white but some shade of gray. These threads are generally populated with people with digital minds. I like to try to push the herd back toward gray.
6. I'm a bit of an unconventional thinker and I like to make people try to see both sides of a coin (especially numismatists).
7. I've been on ebay for many years, have had very few bad experiences, and don't like to see people with almost no experience blowing smoke.
8. As we discussed yesterday, all these negative threads don't help the mood of the board.
9. Some of the threads attack people who are just not good at listing or describing on ebay. Having grown up poor in MO I don't like to see people who are doing their best called scammers.
10. Ebay is as close as we get to pure free enterprise today. This is one of the things that has made America great. We need to keep ebay clean but many of these threads don't recognize the value of the free market represented there and want to just throw it out with the bathwater.
That's more than enough. I try not to be obnoxious about it and I'll never change. I'm too old.
Cheers,
Jerry
<< <i>well i bid my max of $666.66 damn scambuster outbid me LOL >>
Be careful, you're playing with your real ID. If you acutally end up with the winning bid you might get a neg--look at scambuster's rating. --Jerry

Newbie, at least on these boards.
This is exactly why these scams work, because a newbie hasn't seen them before, he gives them the benefit of the doubt and then gets burned. The more experienced posters on this board can spot these scams a mile away because they are so obvious to them.
Unfortunately no matter how many times I have seen threads talking about the red flags of eBay buying, there is always someone that can't see it clearly. This doesn't mean that you can't buy on eBay, it just means that if you think you found a "rip", you are the one that will probably be ripped. You need to "see" the red flags.
It is good to learn from your mistakes, but it is better if you can learn from someone elses mistake.
Joe.

I agree with Joe. Not only is it better to learn from someone else's mistake, it's a lot cheaper!
