A coin with a recent high bid of $2,250 comes to mind, though there were extenuating circumstances there.

In my personal experience, the best I've done in a sale was an AU 1891 IHC I sold go from $14 about ten seconds before the end of the auction to $51 at the end. The bidder who was high at $14 had a max of $20, and then two late snipes came in, one for $50 and one for something above $50.

I don't remember exactly what I paid for the coin, it was Liberty Nickel that sold on ebay for $300+. It sold for that much due to the toning and I think I paid $70.00 for it.

I waited all year for a special $40-$50 item to actually show up on ebay. Two idiot snipers ended it at $150. I was dreading waiting another year or two for another to auction.

But, a month later the same item was back on auction from the same seller, and I won it at $52.

Last month I sold a run of the mill 1964 AH proof in a PCGS 65 (non-CAM) holder for over $100. Two guys put in snipes at that level, with the next highest bid around $30. I felt just terrible for the guy as I withdrew his money from my PayPal account. image

Incomplete planchets wanted, especially Lincoln Cents & type coins.

A 1964 PCGS PR68CAM Accented Hair that brought $3150 when the coin had a market value between $1200 and $1500, and the previous record sale was about $1800.

The all time stupidest I've seen was two phone bidders who were after an MS-64PL common Morgan with a sheet
of about $1,300. It was supposed to be Ex: Wayne Miller, and the idiots went to $12,500 plus 15%!
