I just read the thread about unopened mint sets, got a bit worried, so I opened the two I've been sitting on. They are really nice, even after 42 years. My question is, What is the difference between a regular mint set, and a special mint set from 1964? Inquiring minds need to know.

The '64 SMS was not issued in the type of packaging that the standard set was. Indeed,
most of the known SMS's are not associated with any kind of packaging and one was pulled
from a junk bucket. I've heard of some type of cardboard holder for the others but haven't
seen it.

That thread is actually discussing proof sets. Proof sets were sealed by the mint. Mint sets, however, were not. Thus if you had sealed 1964 "mint sets" somebody had already checked the coins.

Russ, is the opened state also true for the 1947-58 mint sets? I see "unopened" sets for sale now and then.

On those, I don't know. I've never had the opportunities to witness the opening of sealed boxes that I've had with the later sets.
