Proof "UNOPENED" Mint sealed envelopes? leary?

Did the Mint (Philadelphia) actually seal, water activated glue, for lack of better explaination, the Manilla envelopes the proof sets came in back in 55/56/57/etc. ? I've seen many, many listings of unopened envelopes...everyone I've bought from dealers/coins shows was already open, never paid much attention to the envelope, just made sure the date on the envelope matched the proof coins inside.

Yes to the tape question . Here is a thread that contains some thoughts on the issue .

Yes they did seal the envelopes. However, now anyone can buy new envelopes that are virtually identical to the original envelopes. A proof set can be bought, examined, searched for errors and cameos, then put in a new envelope and sealed. This is how so many "proof sets with unopened envelopes" are on the market. A few years ago, there were virtually no proof sets for sale in unopened envelopes! The conclusion is don't pay a premium for proof sets in unopened envelopes.

Two things...first, the mint sealed all the proof set envelopes before sending them out.

Second thing, they are plain manila envelopes with a little black printing on the bottom...easily duplicated with unsophisticated methods, and it's done every day.

Round that down to - don't trust any of them.

If this were the case, how the heck would I know what was in my unopened 1955 flat pack? The content could be a 1963 and I would not even khow because I never open the envelop.

Is that the Original Proof Set in an original envelop?
If so, it has been very well preserved.

    << <i>Russ,

Nope. They started in late 1963, and the mint started printing them on the envelopes in 1964.

    Nope. It's a bogus envelope.

I would be leery of a lot of them, but there have been two instances on Eprey where i bought "unopened" lots of 10 '64 proof sets. One of them had a cameo Kennedy in it, and the other lot had 5(!) Accented Hair Kennedys out of 10 sets!

The vast majority of my scores have come from open sets, but I have gotten lucky a couple of times. My favorite is nine sealed sets I BINed in two lots, one of five and the other of four, from the same seller. All nine sets contained Accented Hairs, six of which graded cameo at PCGS. That was a rather profitable purchase. image

Two of the three 67dcam accented hair Kennedys I have made came from a lot of 50 sealed 64 proof sets...among the other coin were 3 68cam AH Kennedys a handful of 67 and 66 cams as well.

The trick is to buy a fresh lot from someone you trust...ie, not ebay!!!
