Do you think it would be okay to fill the 1824/1 hole with an 1824/4?

I would like to know if you think it would be okay to fill the 1824/1 hole in the Whitman album with an 1824/4. I found an 1824/4 that looks to be very nice and went ahead and purchased it but I thought I would get an opinion as to whether I should crack her and fill the 1824/1 hole with her or leave her slabbed. So what would you do? Crack her or leave her in her tomb? She is graded by NGC so feel free to guess the grade while you are at it.image

I think if you have to ask if it's OK to fill a hole.... the fun is lost. I know you're having fun, but this is one reason I don't care for set building.
I think you have a fine collection and have a good eye. And as I told you in PM, I think you should fill any hole that makes you happy.image

I just figured I would see what some of the others here would do. I will probably add her to the album since there isn't really that much of a difference between the 1824/1 and the 1824/4. I figured I would try to get some other people involved. It gets a little boring just posting about purchasing a coin so I thought I would mix it up a little bit.image

It's your collection; do as you please. About 65 to 70 percent of the "24/1"s that I see offered in the market are actually 4/4s anyway.image

By the way, nice-looking VF-20 to 25 coin.
Just because I'm old doesn't mean I don't love to look at a pretty bust.

It's your collection, so of course it's "ok"

That said, whenever I've filled an album hole with "the wrong coin", it's always bugged me until it was fixed.

Ditto. If you want a filler till the right coin is picked up, and it won't get under your skin--then do it.
Some coins are just plain "Interesting"

The 1824/1 O-101 is an underrated marriage, much tougher than the 1824/4 O-109 & O-110. For about ten years, all I could find for my set piece 1824/1 was an XF45.

I don't think it makes sense to put an 1824/4 into a hole for 1824/1. If you consider doing that, you might as well stuff any old 1824 marriage into that hole.

I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.

NO. Putting the wrong coin in a hole where an example is relatively easy available is not acceptable to me and is not allowed. You just buy a blank dansco half dollar album without dates listed and use that for your spares if need be. But putting the wrong coin in a hole on purpose is just plain wrong. Leave the hole open for the correct coin when you get it and you will get it sooner or later. JMHO. Bob

Thanks for all of the opinions guys. I am really torn as to what to do now. I am really starting to consider just leaving her in the slab and waiting for an 1824/1 to come along. I could live with it being in the hole but like some of you have expressed that would be wrong for me to do. As for getting an empty page. I could do that but there is no way that I can add it to the album itself so it would just be a loose page running around. Once again thanks for the advice guys.image

    BTW, NGC graded her VF-30.image
