Nothing like a good Rip!

One of my favorite rips was a coupla large size national bank notes I bought from another dealer at a show for around $1000. I sent them to CGA and they came back CGA 65 and CGA 66 respectively (this was around 1998). I listed them on ebay and after negotiating got $3,100 for them (I was initially asking $3500). Now in my view this was certainly a more accrate value of their worth. Do you think the dealer I bought them from got ripped? Or the buyer? I frankly think there was no hanky panky here at all just good buy low sell high - this is what the coin biz is all about (and what makes fun and games on the bourse exciting - nothing like a good rip!). BTW unless you have some Gem Large Size Nationals to sell me at bid, do not make a fool of yourself by quoting greensheet.
Another time a teenage kid came up to my table at a show where retail had been really slow with a raw 1936 Texas PDS set - they looked slimy in their PVS flips and needed a dip. I bought them at blue book MS 60, dipped them and sent them to Teletrade raw coin service (no grading fees upfront). They all made PCGS MS 65 and I made money on the deal. Another deal I have fond memories of. You just never know what kinda goodies will be walking up to the table.
What about you - have you gotten some really good rips lately? Lets hear your stories and I will share some more of mine with you.

Russ, Stop participating in his fantasy life. He doesn't have an eBay ID.
Thanks

<< <i>You're not welcome on this forum, Derek. To blindly attack someone of such impeccable character as Coinguy1 (while not even having the guts to ID yourself) shows your lack of any value here. >>
I went back through some of his posts, looks like he's attacked a dozen or so respected members around here.
His real class showed through when a YN asked an innocent question titled I feel dumb for asking this - and his response is "You are". He's not welcome in my book.
I'd rather listen to the other idiot 96eagle - at least he only stalks Russ

No, this is definitely on topic. Just because this philistine is to numismatics what Andrew Dice Clay is to stand up comedy is no reason to write off his monumental contributions to this message board.
One of my fav rips was a $10 nice au lib I got for $180 recently. On the sell side I sold a note which I had 17 cents in for $19 - it was fairly priced as CV was $20. I had bought a pack of 100 earlier at the show for $17 from a dealer blowing out the stuff. I try to make a big margin on the cheap stuff and sell nice slabs at least 20% above CDN Ask fairly priced of course. At one show a guy showed his kid a polished circ common morgan dollar in my raw coin stock - I guess he was trying to show off to the kid that he could tell a cleaned coin - i said nothing. At the next show ironically enough a gal bought it for $15 for her kids xmas along with some junk coins I had $25 in for $50. slabs were not selling well but I did well with junk and moving the polished dollar (i had zero in it was part of an estate deal - I value the crap coins at zero when making an offer) sort of made my day too to sell it. Another guy came up with some modern slabs to sell - got them at 40% of pcgs retail. I also sold a nice MS 66 slabbed world coin I had $35 in for $75 (I had bought it from Teletrade). CV was $10 (of course thats ms 60) but at the time I thought I way overpaid for it - got caught in the passion of bidding. So sometimes the coin u think has zero chance of selling just mite sell ROFLMAO.
tell me about some of your rips - its all in the art of how the rip is done don't u agree?
<< <i>I like traveling the show circuit- lots of fun and games. What a lot of u don't realize is how you are being ripped by the big dealers and their overgraded big ticket coins. Maybe some of u ran across my table at Long Beach, we exchanged pleasantries, I glady took your money and no one knew who I really was LOL. thanks for the business guys. Long Beach was good for me. I think the person who bought a nice 65 slightly better date saint from me for $3500 was one of you LOL - it had been in a 64 holder for sometime but finally made 65 on the 7th submission a change in market val from $900 to $3500 - of course did not tell him that.....

You are the best coin dealer ever.
I'm curious when people who doctor photos on these forums and post them are going to be under fire.

Note the writing style, grammar and punctuation; they seem to be a match as well.
"Ask, and it shall be given you; seek, and ye shall find; knock, and it shall be opened unto you." -Luke 11:9
"Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God is one LORD: And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thine heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might." -Deut. 6:4-5
"For the LORD is our judge, the LORD is our lawgiver, the LORD is our king; He will save us." -Isaiah 33:22
also you have to figure in your cost for CGA
have you been to the currency forum?
$1000 properly placed in the coin market 10 years ago could be worth 5000-10000 today
if you could have done that in 2 days or 2 weeks, than that would be a rip
Let's see: $18 plus $25 plus $40 equals $83. That's a lot of work and trash-talking for $83. Bravo!
why the penchant for calling some of the best dealers/members/experts in their respective fields bottom-feeders??

Couldn't be Laura's Alt ID. Derek doesn't misspell enough words.
Worry is the interest you pay on a debt you may not owe.
"Paper money eventually returns to its intrinsic value---zero."----Voltaire
"Everything you say should be true, but not everything true should be said."----Voltaire
That's criminal, bordering on fraud, and ripping the public.
Some of my local dealers make the rounds and buy stuff from other dealers all the time at 10c on the dollar. The sellers were just dumb. Buying $2,000 coins for $500 from other dealers is common place.
For nearly 20 years of being on the "coin circuit," and these are the memborable rips for Dealer Derek, you almost have to laugh.

I was thinking the same thing.
Is this the first post on this board about somebody ripping a novice?
Gee, I'd think in this group at least one person would have come here bragging about a rip before now.
