**I have decided (1st post)** Eagle Scout Money.....What should I spend it on?

As you may have heard, awhile back I got my Eagle rank. I built a bridge in a state park. It took a lot of work, but it was worth it.

My parents always said when I got my eagle they will let me choose something or things that cost $200 (or more, I pay above $200). I want to get coins (of course). I have debated on what to get with no luck. I would perfer the coin(s) to have an eagle on it (see the connectionimage?) Thanks in advance and I cannot wait to see the ideas start coming in!!!

Andy

***Thanks for all the ideas and advice. It really helped. Here is what I am going to do. I am going to get the 2006 NGC gold (1/10), silver, and platinum eagles (1/10) all in uncirculated condition. It will cost more than $200, but I think i can cough up the extra money. I'll than get them encapsuled in one of the big NGC holders saying something about getting eagle. I wonder if you can do that? I think this would be neat because of all the eagles on the coins (see the connection?). Also, a lot of people recomended the American Eagle program. How does that sound? I'll have to start looking on ebay. Thanks for all the advice! It will be a while, but I will post a picture when I get this set complete. Thanks again!***

Congrats! image My cousin just made eagle scout, too!

Lets see here, a really nice flying eagle cent might be in order. Gobrecht dollars, too, have an awesome eagle but I think they go for considerably more than 200 dollars. Perhaps something from 1906, like a Barber, to commemorate the date. Or a 2006 gold eagle coin maybe, like the 1/4 oz version.

  • I'd think a gold coin with an eagle would be appropriate...... Not only appropriate, but something that could be the start of an heirloom piece that could be passed on to your own son/daughter someday....... And what better than having a story of how your parents bought it for you to honor your achievement ? image

Well I think a nice Morgan would be neat, or even a nice Ike with pretty color.

Other options would be a nice type coin from the early 1800's.

Just a few thoughts to get you started.

You can get a nice early s mint morgan in 63dmpl for under $100, that would be my personal choice.

A Gold Eagle of some kind, or a nice bust dime image

I can tell you what I might buy for $200, but I think one of the things that would make is special is something that you've been lusting over but haven't been able to afford. We can help you narrow the search or find the perfect specimen for the occasion. If, for example, you've been smitten by high grade Morgan dollars, I'd steer your $200 toward an MS66 1880-S.

Get yourself one of the new silver eagle 3 coin sets from the US mint and another classic $100 coin.

Suggest a nice AU58 Liberty half eagle or quarter eagle.

Eagle Scout, that is an impressive accomplishment. I am glad to hear a young person finish something that he started. PM me your address, I have an extra 2006 PCGS MS69 Silver Eagle that I was able to get off of Boom that I will send you.

Come on the rest of you old gizziers, pony up, check your surplus supplies. If someone wants to orginize for a 'gold eagle' to acknowledge this milestone endeavor that Weather11am achieved, PM me and I will donate $25 for the cause.

I'd buy a nice AUish Flying Eagle Cent.

You should be able to pick up a nice example for about that much.

What about getting the new $5 gold SF commem direct from the US Mint ($230). It will be brand new and have that cool eagle from the seated liberty series on the back of it. My guess is the proof will look stunning, both the obverse and the reverse. It won't be shipped until Dec 15th though.

You have worked very hard for this award- these are not "given" away

As you know in Boyscouting silver is the color of the Eagle award

Get the rarest morgan you can find for $200

    Congratulations on your accomplishment.

    My suggestion is two-fold:

Order the 3 coin 2006 Silver Eagle Set next Weds. $100.00

    And

Order a Proof 1/10th Ounce Gold Eagle $ 100 about??

You'd then have 4 beautiful coins with eagles on them which is quite appropriate; and your money spent would present little downside risk and lots of upside potential.

    Good Luck!

Congratulations on your Eagle award. It will become more important to
you as you get older. I received mine on September 6, 1958 and to this
day consider it one of the biggest achievements of my life.
  • post this on the OF and you'll get some dandy ideas image

    Congrats on making Eagle. image

Of course you gotta get an Eagle, and I'd go for gold. I think a 2006 1/4 oz to signify the year you achieved this milestone would be cool.

  • An 1806 Half Dollar in VG is probably in the neighborhood of $200.

Get something gold that you like, most have eagles on the reverse image

Your best bet would be to buy a nice 19th century proof type coin (indian cent, two cent, liberty nickel, etc)-----but you appear to like bullion
Look in EBAY under exonumia--and type in "boy scouts" for your search---you will find several Franklin mint medals for around the cost of silver.

Congratulations - making Eagle Scout is something you can be proud of all your life. It is an accomplishment that shows you can finish what you started even when it takes a long time and a lot of work.

Now I have the idea that you should be able to use that accomplishment to extend your $200 gift. You should be able to talk your parents into paying for the grading fees and large, customized NGC holder. After all that will be an heirloom that can be passed down for generations, and besides only about 5% of boys that start out in scouting make it to Eagle. Besides that you are paying the excess over $200 for the coins - so they should at least pay the grading fees (I raised two kids myself and know how these things are done!).

  • congrats on the accomplishment.

the american eagle would be a great was to remember and celebrate it.

I cannot imagine how you decided on a "modern" coin.image If you are at all interested in numismatics, opt for a Bust series coin encapsulated by PCGS/NGC/ANACS/ICG.
I collect Capped Bust series by variety in PCGS AU/MS grades.
