So, a guy just comes in to my shop to sell some coins.

RussRuss Posts: 48,514 ✭✭✭
Two big bags of bulk silver quarters and dimes. Nearly 30 lbs worth. Everything about this guy from the junky van to the sleazy chick in the front seat screamed stolen coins. So, I ask him a few questions about the origin and got the usual "grandfather died" crap. I tell him that if we're going to do a deal he'll need to provide his driver's license, fill out a form, and he'll be paid by check. Said he needed cash and asked if I knew any place that paid cash. I said no, and he headed out the door. Reported him to the cops.

Actually, I think you called it correctly. Should be more of a history behind 30lbs. of silver then just "Grand pap kicked the can". image

A dog would be okay. image The real tipoff was that he didn't want to provide his driver's license and demanded cash even after I explained to him that he could cash the check at my bank two blocks away.

So there I was today, driving through the Northwest with my wife when I stopped by this store that had a sign in the window to buy coins. As it so happens, grandad SM recently died as a result of a skateboarding accident and I had grandad's bag of junk silver. I needed some money but because I didn't have my drivers license with me, he wouldn't buy them for cash. Maybe it's a good thing, the guy looked like one of those creepy people that hoards kennedy halves.

I don't know whether to make a comment about Russ's store (which I'd love to visit) or the whole West Virginia State Police thing.

So I just won't say anything more.

They say hindsight is 20-20. But I know how Russ must've felt. Law enforcement folks call it "hinky". As in: "That guy makes me feel hinky" One gets the overwhelming sense that there's not something quite right Which I assume is why Russ asked for the license ID.

What if Russ bought the sacks and still reported the incident to police? Russ is in possession of the potentially stolen goods and the thieves no longer have someone elses property. They go on their happy way thinking they've made it in the clear. Meanwhile the Police are investigating. This scenario has two outcomes: Russ gets to keep his coins because the suspects are clean. Or, the cops nab the suspects and the coins are returned to their rightful owners and Russ's coin insurance covers his loss. Or else if the cops nab the bad guys before they have a chance to flee, Russ gets his money back anyway.

At least the authorities have been alerted.

Funny - sounds like the same guy who I bought a collection from my table at a show recently. The gal was really hot, looked like a stripper. She smiled at me the whole time - almost like she knew what I was thinking. Didn't think he would go for the deal (as I was looking to get it cheap and flip a lot of it for $$$ right away - went thru my act like I was really figuring hard with the calculator and then saying "now lets see how I can fudge this up") plus he talked like a knucklehead but when I doled out the cash they quickly took it and were on their way. Some of the coins are nice enough to slab and they will on the way to Teletrade (raw coin svc). The rest, well have you seen some nice circ silver dollar lots and collector coins on ebay starting at 99 cents? My pay pal account is like a swollen river after a flood - well gotta go buy some coins......

Another possibility: the coins are held by the polie as evidence until a trial is held. The defense attorney decides to press for delays to improve the chance that the couple will be found not guilty. Meanwhile, Russ has neither his money nor the coins. Russ's insurance won't pay because the legal case isn't resolved yet. So Russ has to sit and wait, sit and wait. Good move, Russ, not letting this scenario happen.

the guy does something responsible and all he gets is schit. dealers such as you are few and far between. i had a similar experience when i sold 3000 40% silver halves to a dealer in ohio, by the way he was interrogating me i know the guy was certain i had stolen them. but i had nothing to hide so i gave him my info and then i asked if he needed my fingerprints, he said no and i said good cuz i dont trust coin dealers. we both had a good laugh LOL to who ever started the "i bet the chick was hot" thank you sincerely for the chuckle. now to the person that believes only cops and military personell should be "allowed" to carry guns, i say this:
you can cut someone's throat with a plastic butterknife but should plastic utensils be outlawed ? guns dont kill people, irresponsible people with guns can kill people. we live in a world where not everyone obeys the law. laws dont stop crime you can choose for yourself if you want to own a gun but dont speak for me if i wake up in the middle of the night to a prowler in my house, my mossberg five shot pump is always close at hand, (under a pile of plastic butter knives of course)

Didn't know for certain, but I had a gut feeling. Same kind of gut feeling I get when somebody tries to run a credit card scam on me. It just didn't feel right. Now, if he'd been willing to pony up his ID and accept a check, I'd have decided my gut feeling was wrong. He didn't, so I stayed with my gut.

Russ' approach is par for the course with dealers I know. Smoeone walking in with coins that "don't seem to belong with them" plus a reluctance to accept anything but cash, or show ID, is a suspect combination.
