MS70 penny on Teletrade this month!!!!

That's gonna be a FUN auction to watch. Yes, me watch, me not bid. Me ALOT smarter than that. Talk about MOON MONEY to some of these cent collectors! Just think if another one comes out in the next couple months, what a sad, sad thing that would be.
I don't blame the seller one bit!! I'd get rid of that thing faster than a........than a....................whatever. I really can't think of anything clever right now. But you get my point. Before another one hits the market and drops the price on this one. I think the owner is a board member. Congrats to him, whoever he is!

He is a forum member, Wes.

I forgot what thread this came out in, but it's someone who does not submit a lot and just happened to make the grade with a 2003 from my understanding.

    I'd sell it , too.

It's not on the auction list yet. I believe it will be auctioned the 27th or 28th. It's in the announcments somewhere on the page.

THE REVISED ARTICLE ON THE PCGS HOME PAGE DESCRIBES THE DETAILS SURROUNDING THE AUCTIONING OF THE COIN:

PCGS Certifies First Perfect Business Strike Cent

    - August 29, 2006
It took 20 years and over 160,000 tries, but in August 2006, the Professional Coin Grading Service (PCGS) finally assigned the MS-70 grade to a Lincoln cent struck for circulation. The historic coin is a perfect 2003 Cent in full Red MS-70.

Other Lincoln Cents, such as Proof and Satin Finish coins, have earned a grade of 70 in the past, but those were coins produced through special minting processes designed to produce coins of near-perfection. The fact that this coin is a "business strike" meant for everyday commerce makes it all the more special, since no special steps were taken to ensure the quality of this piece when it was made.

According to Jaime Hernandez, Price Guide Editor at PCGS, "This coin is the Holy Grail of Lincoln Cents and something for which we have been searching for two decades. If this coin comes on the market, the competition for it will be fierce. Every advanced Cent or type collector will want to own this coin."

In 2009, the Lincoln Cent will celebrate its 100th Anniversary. Will another perfect MS-70 Cent show up anytime soon? "Not likely", says PCGS President Ron Guth. "This is a remarkable coin and one of the very few that will ever be able to meet PCGS' strict requirements for the MS-70 grade."

Teletrade (www.teletrade.com) will be offering this remarkable coin for sale as a feature of their September Premier Plus auction on September 28, 2006. Also, the coin will be available for viewing at the Teletrade booth at the Long Beach Coin, Stamp & Collectibles Expo from September 14-16, 2006.

You know what would make a great Q&A thread?

Having HRH describe how it went down in the grading room. Did the grader just enter MS70 into the computer without batting an eye? Did the grading team study the coin for 30 minutes? Did they call HRH in for a ninth opinion? Was there a buzz around the place, or was it just business as usual?

I think describing how it happened would be an interesting tale.

New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.

I am happy for the guy and look forward to watching the bidding that will take place when the coin goes up for auction.

An MS 70 Lincoln is way down on my list of coins that I would love to own. Just wish that I had the money this thing is going to bring to buy some of those coins.image

strike while the iron is hot... realize the max price before there is another MS-70 to make the grade. If there is one MS-70, there are probably dozens, if not hundreds of pennies graded MS-69 that are probably just as perfect.

"This coin is the Holy Grail of Lincoln Cents".

As Stewart Blay has said in another thread, this comment made by the PCGS price guide editor, is not shared by many Lincoln cent collectors. My choice for the "Holy Grail" Lincoln cent is the 1909 VDB Matte Proof because only 420 of these were sold by the US Mint and probably less than 200 exist today in ALL grades. Steveimage

    two questions

if you had to put this coin away in your collection for at least 12 years for your kids college fund or your retirement fund how much would you pay for this coin right now in its current holder???

and right now how much would you pay for this coin if it was cracked out raw and put into a flip??

I do not beleive PCGS will allow another MS70 Lincoln cent to come out for quite awhile because there is alot of hype behind this one and I bet there is alot of people resubmitting their ms69's to see if theirs will come back a 70 as well. Of course this is just my opinion and we all know how they are

I do not want to put words in Mr. Hernandez' mouth, but, what I believe he meant by the "holy grail" comment is that for the "average Joe", there is virtually no chance to find an MS67RD 1909(svbd) or even a 1958 or 1969 DDO cent out there any longer. But, to modern coin "hunters" out there, the chance of finding a "PCGS perfect" Lincoln Memorial cent is a real and distinct possibility - FOR LESS THAN A TWO CENT PURCHASE PRICE RAW. I do not believe the comment was intended to suggest that this 2003 cent was in any way on par with major rarities such as 1958 DDO cents. On the other hand, it is probably one of the coolest grading "grand slams" (i.e. the "holy grail" of modern grading/upgrading) out there considering a coin worth less than 2 cents "bid" turns into a coin worth whatever number of thousands of dollars it ends up fetching at auction.

Regardless of what my last post said an MS-70 biz strike intended for ciculation coinage is remarkable. Notice the op icon shows there is a Santa Clause in numismatics. hahhahahaha

It's very tough to predict. Most Lincolns don't even exist in MS-69 much less MS-70.

There should be very strong demand from a small group of collectors. While everyone
seems to just assume it will go in a registry set, don't bet on it.
