Fake silver dollars from China

Every time I find a fake Bust dollar on eBay I notify the seller. I am careful not to accuse them, but simply word it like "you'll be disappointed to learn that your dollar is a Chinese fake." They ask how I know it's fake, so I respond with several paragraphs explaining the color, weight, lettering, device artwork, stars, rim, denticles, etc. The sellers are always very polite and apologetic, and take the auctions down quickly.

I'm going to write up a canned response to send in the future, but I want to hear your responses to "How do you know it's fake?". I think I can answer the question pretty comprehensively for Bust dollars, but how about for Seated, Trade and Morgans? I hear the counterfeiters' production methods are getting better now and they are using real silver so they weigh almost the right amount.

Well I'm no expert but I have a crude cast counterfeit american silver eagle. It's made from tin, not real silver. It's obvious it's a fake because of how light it is, and also the date says 1900, when american silver eagles were only started in the 80's.

I saw a ton of fake Bust Dollars in Macau and Hong Kong in the 5 1/2 months I was over there. The number of cast copies of U.S. Silver dollars was frightening. Smoeone without much experience could be easily fooled image

Most of the time they already know it's fake and are just looking for suckers.

Ya, but they're not going to admit they know its a fake.

They will just keep re-listing them until they hook a bidiot!
  • ttt and better title, for the day folks.
  • When I see them, I just think they do not look 'right.'

I suspect that the sellers of those counterfeits are very well aware of what they are doing.

    All glory is fleeting.

You may be right, but I prefer to assume the best in people. I've never had anyone argue with me, or "act" like a scammer in response. One seller asked me about two other auctions he had, and I said I couldn't tell if they were fake or not, but he voluntarily took them down also "just to be on the safe side".

Maybe they are scammers, but the net result is that these auctions are offline now, so I feel like maybe I've done a good deed for someone.
