Can someone recommend a good hard times token?

kiyotekiyote Posts: 5,614 ✭✭✭✭✭
I worked my tail off on Memorial Day and am gettin' some extra money for the effort-- I want to get a slice of Americana from the 19th century, and am intrigued by Hard Times Tokens. I see the folks across the street have been certifying them-- can anyone recommend a good token type? I'm not wanting to spend more than $200.00, but from what I've seen, there's plenty of examples.

I waded into PCGS graded paper money and got stung.. I freely admit I don't know a thing about hard times tokens. image

You might also consider Condor tokens, very interesting, dated from the 18th century and not expensive. Having said that, I know next to nothing about them.

It's a Civil War Token, but I don't know the specific name or reference number. It was cheap, though. image

$200 can get you a nice HTT or even multiples.

The Low-49 variety is the sole half cent HTT, so consider that.
    L-54 is the "AM I NOT A WOMAN & A SISTER" anti-slavery token.
L-120 is the famous Feuchtwanger's cent.
I especially like the crude features of the assorted Bucklin's tokens, L-77, 88, 89, 92, 93, and 145 (and probably some others I don't remember.) At least half of those will be in your range. In fact, most of the Troy, NY area HTT's can be considered examples of a charming though crudely done American folk art.
L-275 is the Beck's Public Bath token, though that may be above your range.
There are plenty of others. Look at Stack's sale of the Ford IV collection, and Hertiage's upcoming Wiseman sale (ignore the cataloging) to see what designs catch you.
