<< <i>Some of those schooners out there in the harbor are not that old, not as old as the Todd. I went out on a whale watch on the Atlanticat about a month ago, didn't see the Todd, she must have been out for the day. >>
I had my aunt show up from Colorado (81 tough old bird) with her grandson (25 wimp) for a two week vaction and I took them out on the Alantic Cat for the 3 1/2 hour whale watch last month, six foot sea, she had a blast but he emptied his stomach of his breakfast into a bown paper bag. Never laughed so hard in my life, (flat lander).
The TX quarter is in the race for the bottom. Out of all the themes they could have done, they ended up doing a design which looks like the logo on any Texas welcome center on the major interstate highways coming in. Bo-ring!!!
Methinks they could have used some of the elements of the very busy looking TX commerative half from the 30's (like the Alamo) and made the quarter a bit jazzier. Rumor has it that the TX quarter is slightly larger than all the other state quarters.
Louisiana............................just what is this mess of a design trying to convey............the Louisiana purchase?.......or the state of Louisiana?...................or everything? ............and more. What a wreck!
And what's the problem with that pelican..............looks constipated to me!
<< <i>I seem to recall the mint wanting to change the 3 masted schooner to two masts but it remained 3 in the end. What is the name of that schooner? >>
The original Maine design had the Pemaquid Point Light with the "Victory Chimes" schooner. The US Mint's version originally had two masts, but was changed to three like the Victory Chimes.
The Florida quarter is just amateurish. It gets my vote.
New collectors, please educate yourself before spending money on coins; there are people who believe that using numismatic knowledge to rip the naïve is what this hobby is all about.
O.K., I guess icons-thrown-on-a-platter Florida is easily the worst coin WITHOUT a state outline. And they had so many better opportunities! They could have chosen South Beach, for instance. That would have been the most daring coin since my icon was minted!
Idaho will be the worst with a state outline. It's illegal to encourage people to kill endangered species.
Salute the automobile: The greatest anti-pollution device in human history! (Just think of city streets clogged with a hundred thousand horses each generating 15 lbs of manure every day...)

I submitted a design to Texas that had just obout everything you could think of crammed on it. But they chose the minimalist approach instead.
"The original Maine design had the Pemaquid Point Light with the "Victory Chimes" schooner. The US Mint's version originally had two masts, but was changed to three like the Victory Chimes."
DCarr beat me to it. It took someone 'from away' to correctly answer the question, but he is right. That is the 'Victory Chimes' schooner.
As for the original question about the worst State Quarter design, regrettably it simply has to be New Hampshire. I knew the Old Man of the Mountain well, and visited it many times as a child, but that design made it look more like the Michelin Man or maybe a marshmallow in the microwave. The Old Man is gone now, and it is too bad that many Americans will only know it from that terrible State Quarter.
They that can give up essential Liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither Liberty nor safety. Benjamin Franklin
How about New Hampshire? They put a picture of a rock on it, and then shortly there after the rock crumbles down the mountain and now it doesn't resemble a face anymore.

50 state program is a big blunder that had alot of potential. They seem like add campaigns rather than representations to history and liberty. Giving the design decision to the state itself was a major blunder. Voting was a major blunder too. THese designs should have been decided by third parties in congress or specialist from the mint.
It's a bit unfair for Florida to monopolize the Space Shuttle. So Stupid. The space Shuttle deserves it's own commemoritive if one doesn't alreadyexist.
Oh. My. God. Those are some of the fugliest quarter designs ever. Can OK not get one person with any sense of art? I voted for #6, because it was the only one that didn't include a state outline.
There sure are some poor ones and no real classic designs.
Florida -- Now there is a coin designed by a committee. Just left out Anita Bryant, Elian Gonzalez, and a capsized raft of drowning Haitian refugees.
Alabama -- This wasn't supposed to be the inevitable Helen Keller commemorative, now was it. When I htink of Alabama, I think of dixie flags, cross burnings (wouldn't that have made a wonderful reverse!), Natalee Holloway, and the Dukes of Hazzard (even if they happen to be set in a different state).
Texas -- I guess they settled for minimalism after that damned cluttered commemorative.
Ohio -- They just can't give up that spat with North Carolina can they. The astronaut aspect ratio is wrong for a typical human adult. Gary Coleman (from Illinois, not Ohio) or Hervé Villechaize (born in Paris, not Ohio)?
Illinois -- "21st State Century" is retarded. And if they can do "Land of Lincoln" maybe California should have done "Land of Nixon", something that occurred to me yesterday as I passed a car with Illinois plates yesterday on my drive up I-5 through San Clemente.
Kansas -- Sunflowers in a pasture dwarfed by a bison. Hmmm.
California -- The sense of scale in that collage is just disturbing in the design. Maybe a more contemporary design for the cutting edge state, like an illegal alien with his leaf blower being mauled by a brown bear at the beach.
I hope Hawaii has a couple Hula Girls on their Quarter. And they should study the Ty 1 Standing Liberty Quarter before submitting the final design. Maybe a planned release of Ty 1 and Ty 2? Close out the program in style.

Voting?? Man I wish we would have had a chance to vote in Colorado. Our wonderful Governor felt obligated to choose for himslef. Only thing I say back to him.... Not voting for you next election!!
However I do agree with you about the quarter program. Although I do enjoy collecting the quarters I think they could have done a much better job of the representations. As great as the program is, it could have been that much better.
Out of all of those I prefer the BirdBlanket design the most, the others are just...terrible at best.
PS: Coxe, the Florida Quarter was also missing Chads, Terry Schiavo, Mangroves, and Palm Trees.
Simply put, it's a waste of metal with some of the designs only taking up the middle portion of the reverses. It would be nice if the space was taken up by something.

<< <i>I think the Nevada coin is a nice design, but they wanted to make it look like a casino chip on the edge and the mint refused it. >>
I submitted this one (via some friends in Carson City) to the Nevada Governor's office in 2004. We also submitted it to the Northern Nevada Railway foundation, the Nevada State Museum (in the old Carson Cith Mint building), and the Nevada State Railroad Museum. They didn't seem very interested in the idea, though.

Michigan Governor Engler, in announcing a design contest for the state's quarter stated: "I'm confident that Michigan will have the greatest quarter in the nation" and "the design process is wide open to the citizen's creativity and ideas".
After the contest was over, it was announced that all five finalists were variations of the simple state outline theme that Engler wanted.
It appears that a state outline was mandated from the start by Engler. So what was the point of the "contest" ? To waste people's time, I suppose. If Engler wanted a simple state outline, that is fine. Nothing wrong with that. By why waste everyone's time with the bogus "contest" ?
BTW, I submitted this design via my Wife's friend in Michigan:
Interesting design. Would have been really cool if the Mint would have set up a press in Carson City for a month and minted some limited CC proofs (or just regular ones since the proofs require too much) of their quarter. Would have taken the wind out of the sails of the Gold Buffs.
I also really hated the Arkansas quarter - and the Texas quarters - I dont know why exactly...
The Texas one is too plain and simple. Kind of uninspired - a map and a star... Reminds me of Texaco and Enron at the same time. Maybe they should have put an oil well or two on it just to promote the local economy.
The Arkansas quarter .. wtf were they thinking there? -- Wheres the razorback in this picture
But I really liked the Oregon and Nevada Quarters..
But my all time favorites were the Connecticut and Delaware quarters,
(Did you spot the die crack on the third branch from the right ??
and the Maine Lighthouse, because I like the subject

Colorado -

Add to the worse on my list, Mississippi, Texas, and South Carolina.
