For Barber Lovers here are pics of my new Halves from the Denver ANA - Want to guess the grades?

I was fortunate to attend Denver with a good friend, it was the first ANA for us both. Attended some of the auctions, took a grading class, scoured the bourse floor, and saw some amazing coins and displays. Had the opportunity to meet some boad members there finally add 7 new halves to my set.

Here are the pics of these although my skills at photography continue to be marginal.

The 1893-O, 1898-S, 1911, and 1915-S were bought at the Heritage Auction. The 1903 was bought from David Weygant, the 1908 from Brandon at Anaconda, and the 1911-S from Harrly Laibstain. It was a great experience both in the auction venue as well as all three dealer who are top professionals with quality in each coin I acquired.

A special thanks as well to my friend Ben for hanging out with me in my pursuit of halves. I hope I didn't take too much time away from the toners you were seeking and we can do this again in the future.

Sorry folks, I don't know why some pics come out a different size then the others. But it gives you some idea anyway.

  • Great lookers! Love the '93-o. Solid strike - is there a die crack in "Half" or something on the plastic?

    Glenn,

7 halves in one week, that is unbelievable success, what a dream!!

I think you are coming right along with the imaging, lighting is the tricky part, different for each coin it seems.

Great finds and thanks for posting!

    Glenn,

Great group of halves. They are all stunning.

Please attach the obverse images to your registry set as these images will eventually disappear from this thred. Every so often I drool over the other imaged sets. Your's should be no different !!

Congratulations again on this major accomplishment.

    Best regards,

    Mike

    Glenn,

You are the man! Stepped up and got 7 new dates. That's great!

I checked out the dates you got from the heritage sale, and the pics there look even better than the ones you posted. ( I do not have a clue how to image mine)

Money Collector, there is a die crack along the top of the letters but what you see at the bottom of the H in half is not on the coin. To be honest don't know what that was, maybe somthing on the slab at that moment when I took the picture?

Thanks everyone for you kind comments. I have a long way to go on the images and for sure the lighting is the tough part.

I will keep working at it until I get some that are decent enough over the next days and put them on the registry set which is the goal.

Dale, it was interesting getting to see the coins in hand. When I went there looking at images I had 2 I thought were definite candidates. After I got done looking in person those both got no votes but the 4 others did. Interestingly the 2 I decided against didn't even sell and the value of the lesson was learned. I need to rely on my own eyes or someone else I trust. Images just don't tell the whole story and can't give you the necessary perspective compared to in hand. Actually, the 1915-S was a maybe but when it came up last and I could grab it for $690 including juice I bought it too.

Got a chance to see the 1906-S in NGC69 in hand on two occasions. I just wish I had won the lottery. image

    Glenn,

Sweet Babers. I wish I could go to a show and find 5-6 XF45 Barber Halves, let alone even one I need. Definetely more fun to find a coin on the bourse that you need then on Ebay. Congrats.

Thanks Craig. XF-45's are ust as tough, maybe tougher.

If you guys would like to guess grades for a couple of days that might be fun. I can tell you they are all 63 to 65, but no cheating looking at Heritage's archives or my registry list ntil after you guess. Would that be fun to do or are my pics so bad it isn't worth it.

    Glenn,

I think the entire group are 64's.

No, I didn't look them up...that's just my opinion - and - that seems to be your grade of choice as well.

While I do pick it seems on 64's there are three of those, two 65's and two 63's. LOL

So Mike you are correct the AVERAGE is 64. Anyone want to guess which 2 are higher and which 2 are lower?

Okay, Glenn, I'll make an itemized stab on your coins...which are all beautiful, BTW...image

1893-O Looks like a 64 from the image...not higher...but you said that there was a 63 in this group.
If any of the coins could be a 63, then this must be it. I like it alot, regardless.
    Its got great original toning.

1898-S Nice skin as well. I like it for a 64.

    1903-P Nice original coin. Here's my PCGS 64. I think your's is also a 64.
    image

1908-P You mentioned that one of the group is a 65. Then, this must be it. My PCGS 65's image is too large
to post here, but its on my Registry set.

1911-P Nice original coin, a 64, no doubt.

1911-S Very well struck, creamy white, very attractive, and at least a 64+++...and easily a 65.

1915-S Nice coin, thick toning, and because of this, PCGS may have given it a 63, but I'm sure its a 64.

    So, how'd I do ? I hate to grade from images...but your base-line of MS 64 was a help

    1908 65

    1911-S 65

Well, I guess after looking at thirty trillion Barbers, I may have gotten the hang of grading them.
